Former Zags soccer player Ching makes World Cup roster

From News Services The Spokesman-Review

NEW YORK – Former Gonzaga University men’s soccer standout Brian Ching was among 11 newcomers named to the U.S. World Cup roster Tuesday.

Ching will become the first Hawaiian to play in the World Cup. A 2001 graduate of GU, he was a two-time All-West Coast Conference first-team selection.

Ching ranks first in career assists (23), tied for second in career points (91) and third in career goals (34) at GU. He helped guide the Bulldogs to back-to-back WCC regular-season co-titles in 1998-99.

Ching was selected in the 2001 Major League Soccer super draft by the Los Angeles Galaxy. Ching joined the San Jose Earthquakes in 2003, and earned his first cap for the U.S. national team during a friendly competition against Wales.

San Jose’s franchise moved to Houston for the current season. Ching scored four goals in an early-season game for the Dynamo.

Twelve holdovers were selected from the 2002 team, which advanced to the quarterfinals in the best showing by the United States since 1930.
