Cowen not ready

The Spokesman-Review

Perhaps now is not the time for Jared Cowen to be considering the WHL draft at all as it is apparent he and his parents are not ready to cut the apron strings.

It is amazing that after many years of traveling to play hockey and to get to the level he’s at hasn’t been long enough for Cowen to get used to playing without his parents or vice versa. And don’t think I can’t possibly understand what it’s like … because I have a 14-year-old who has played hockey locally at the rep level for 10 years.

And, yes, I do hate to miss any of his games, but there are hundreds if not thousands of players who would gladly trade places with Cowen for the chance to be drafted at all, let alone as one of the top picks in the WHL draft.

Instead of boo-hooing that he may have to play for a team that isn’t within a decent travel distance, he should be thankful he’s even being considered. It’s time for Cowen to either grow up and abide by the rules of the WHL bantam draft or stay home and play locally until he is grown up (enough) to leave home and pursue his dream.
