Baseball

District 7 B tournament: Republic (22-4) completed a four-game run through the district tournament with a 5-4 win over Lind-Ritzville (18-3) in the championship game Monday at Avista Stadium. Derek Gianukakis pitched a five-hitter, striking out seven, contributed three hits to the Tigers’ eight-hit attack and drove in two runs. Republic, which defeated St. George’s 9-3 in Monday’s first game at Avista, will meet Asotin at Shadle Park on Saturday at 1 p.m. in regional play to determine first and second seeding to state. Lind-Ritzville, which defeated Northport 6-3 in its first game Monday, plays La Salle at Davis of Yakima Saturday.

St. George’s (18-4) edged Northport (18-5) 9-8 for third- and fourth-seeding to regionals on Dave Peterson’s two-out, run-scoring single that highlighted a three-run seventh inning for the Dragons. All the runs were unearned. St. George’s will play DeSales in Walla Walla at 1 p.m. Saturday and Northport meets Pateros at 10 a.m. at Shadle Park in other regional matchups.

Softball

“Great Northern League: Rachel Maddox went 3 for 4, driving in two runs and scoring one, to lead a 12-hit Medical Lake attack that backed the five-hit pitching of Caitlyn Smith in a 12-2 win over Pullman that earned the Cardinals the No. 2 seeding into the district tournament. Smith struck out three and walked three. Pullman plays host to Deer Park today at 4 p.m. with the winner earning the No. 3 spot to district.

“District 7 B play-in: Brook Ferderer limited St. Michael’s to two hits while striking out 14 and delivered three hits herself, including a triple, to lead Reardan to a 9-2 win that earned the Indians a spot against Inchelium in the District 7 tournament Wednesday at Waterfront Park in Medical Lake. Teresa Christerson, who drove in three runs, and Yanasia Van Komen also had three hits each for Reardan.

Golf

District 5/8 3A boys: Joel Dahmen, a Clarkston senior, shot an 11-under-par 61 at Indian Canyon for a seven-shot victory in the tournament that qualified 13 golfers for state next Tuesday at Indian Canyon. Four golfers were under par, including North Central senior Matt Strandbert, whose 69 was good for third, a stroke behind runner-up Alex Moore of Hanford. George Pechtel of West Valley-Yakima was fourth at 71. The GSL had six qualifiers.

District 7 1A boys: Jason Azzarito of Kettle Falls shot an even-par 70 at Liberty Lake Golf Course to claim medalist honors and lead seven golfers from the district tournament who qualified for the boys State 1A tournament at the same course next Tuesday. Combined with a 69 at Deer Park last week, Azzarito had a 36-hole score of 139 for a 22-stroke edge over runner-up Sam Hatley of Colfax.

District 7 B boys: John Graham of Northwest Christian edged Michael Johnson of Wilbur-Creston 160-162 for medalist honors in the windup of district play at Liberty Lake. The top nine qualify for state next Tuesday at Liberty Lake. Graham shot a 6-over-par 76 to Johnson’s 81 Monday. Wilbur-Creston took the district team title with 87 points.

District 7/9 A/B girls: Northwest Christian seniors Lianne Matkin and Krystal Pitkonen matched 3-over-par 75s in Monday’s windup at Esmeralda to lead 11 qualifiers into the state tournament next Tuesday at the same course. Matkin edged Pitkonen 158-159 for medalist honors in the two-week, 36-hole qualifier. NWC claimed the team title with 65.5 points.
