Nursing scholarship made in child’s name
Second-year students in North Idaho College’s registered nursing program reached out to one of their own when they established a memorial scholarship in the name of a fellow student’s child who died.
The endowment fund has grown to more than $5,860.
One-year-old Madelyn Isabella Sapp died suddenly after suffering from a stroke resulting from a blood infection. Greg Sapp, the child’s father, was completing his second year of nursing school at NIC, and mother Leeanne was working toward a master’s degree in social work from Eastern Washington University. The couple and their other two daughters, 6-year-old Daphne and 3-year-old Ayiana, live in Rathdrum.
Each year, the graduating class of nurses gives a token of appreciation back to the NIC nursing department. This year, the nursing class established a memorial scholarship in honor of Madelyn, to be given each year to a struggling second-year nursing student.
The class set a goal to raise $5,000, the minimum needed to endow the scholarship, allowing it to live in perpetuity with the interest earnings of the fund awarded each year as a scholarship.
Contributions to the Madelyn Isabella Sapp Memorial Scholarship are still being accepted. To contribute, send a tax-deductible donation to the North Idaho College Foundation, 1000 W. Garden Ave., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814, or call (208) 769-5978.
