Huskies top Cougars

Stevie Mussie had 16 kills and Courtney Thompson added 44 assists as No. 4 Washington beat Washington State 30-17, 30-12, 30-23 in a Pac-10 volleyball match Friday in Pullman.

Kelly Hyder had 15 digs to lead the Cougars, who fell to 15-13 overall and 3-11 in the Pac-10.

Washington improved to 22-3 overall and 12-2 in conference.

Women’s basketball

Washington State opened its season with an 80-51 loss to No. 15 Kentucky in the first round of the Women’s Sports Foundation Classic in Lexington, KY.

Jennifer Humphrey had 15 points for the Wildcats (1-0), who took advantage of 22 WSU turnovers.

Adriane Ferguson and Nakejia Kelly scored 12 points each to lead the Cougars.

•Eastern Washington opened its season by beating Montana Tech (0-1) 75-69 at Spokane Community College.

Joanna Chadd led the Eagles with 16 points and Katy Baker added seven rebounds.

•Mary Brown scored 21 points and Kylee Rinehart added 13 rebounds as Casper beat North Idaho 74-67 at the CSI Women’s Classic in Twin Falls, Idaho.

The Cardinals, who led by one point at halftime, shot just 31 percent from the field in the second half. Brittany Duerr led North Idaho with 19 points.

•Misty Atkinson, a 5-foot-10 guard/forward at Clarkston High School, has signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Montana starting with the 2007-08 season.

Men’s basketball

Andre McFarland, a 6-6, 225-pound forward from Las Vegas Brewster Academy, has signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Idaho and play for the Vandals next fall.

Men’s soccer

Kevin Forrest scored all three of Washington’s goals as the Huskies (13-6-1) blanked visiting Creighton (13-5-3) 3-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Huskies will advance to play Wednesday at 10th-seeded Santa Clara.

Junior hockey

Evan Whitt scored twice and assisted on two others as the Spokane Braves (14-9-2) beat host Grand Forks 7-3 in KIJHL play.

Andrew Christ added two goals and Jason Greenwell made 22 saves for the Braves.

Swimming

Washington State beat Washington 153.5-108.5 to earn its third victory in program history over the rival Huskies. WSU senior All-American Erin McCleave scored 27 points.
