Achievements : Area residents complete military training
“Ryan Yoke recently graduated from the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps leader development and assessment course at Fort Lewis, Wash. Yoke, a student at the University of Washington, is a 2003 graduate of Mead High School. He is the son of Mitchell Yoke of Spokane.
“Army National Guard Pfc. Bryce Adams recently graduated from the light wheeled vehicle mechanic advanced individual training course at Fort Jackson, S.C. Adams, the son of LuAna Adams of Grand Coulee and Dave Adams of Superior, Mont., is a 2006 graduate of Superior High School.
“Army Pvt. Steven Schwartz recently graduated from basic training at Fort Knox, Ky. Schwartz is the son of Cassandra Schwartz of Spokane.
“Two airmen with area ties recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.
Air Force Airman 1st Class Andrew Banks, a 2003 graduate of Walla Walla High School, is the son of Autumn Banks of Colbert.
Air Force Airman Michael Wagner, the son of April Hargraves of Moses Lake and Larry Wagner of Hurricane, Utah, is a 2006 graduate of Hurricane High School.
“Army National Guard Pvt. James Anderson recently graduated from the automated logistics specialist advanced individual training course at the U.S. Army Quartermaster Center and School of Fort Lee, Va. Anderson is the son of Alan and Colleen Anderson of Fairchild Air Force Base.
“Scott Schoening recently received his Eagle Scout award, the highest in the Boy Scouts, before graduating from Marine Corps basic training in San Diego.
Schoening, a member of Troop 80, created a jungle gym out of steel pipe for Fairwood Community Church for his project. Schoening, a 2006 graduate of Mead High School, is the son of Max and Heidi Schoening.
“Nick Bormann of Spokane was part of a Gonzaga University debate team that recently competed in a tournament at Pepperdine University. Bormann and partner Grace Saez of Las Vegas advanced to the semifinals before losing to a University of Redlands team.
“Several area residents recently received scholarships for the 2006-2007 academic year at Eastern Washington University.
Rachel Austin was awarded a $300 Woodville-Hagelin scholarship. The award is given to juniors and seniors majoring in health education. Austin, a 1993 graduate of Northwest Christian, is the daughter of Ted and Patti Fennen of Spokane.
Megan Hanson was awarded a $2,500 scholastic honors scholarship. The award is given to freshmen with a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher. Hanson, the daughter of Tom and Carrie Hanson of Spokane, is a 2006 graduate of West Valley High School.
Stacey Lee was awarded a $2,000 Phi Theta Kappa scholarship. The award is given to transfer students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa. Lee, the daughter of Frank and Sally Carpenter of Spokane, is a 1987 graduate of Cailbert High School, Calif.
Lucas Short was awarded a $1,050 Martin and Helen Terzieff scholarship. The award is given to junior and senior communication majors. Short, a 1997 graduate of Mead High School, is the son of Ann Short of Spokane.
Clayton Tupper was awarded a $2,000 transfer honors scholarship. The award is given to transfer students with an Associate of Arts degree and a g.p.a. of 3.7 or higher. Tupper, a 2005 graduate of University High School, is the son of Robert and Debi Tupper.

“North Idaho College student Jodi Cleveland of Athol was recently selected as the Coeur d’Alene Rotary Club Student of the Month. Cleveland is a sophomore majoring in medical transcription. She holds a 3.6 g.p.a.
“Laura James of Hayden was recently awarded a $300 scholarship from the Coeur d’Alene Art Association. James is a fine arts major at North Idaho College.
