Whitworth defeats Cal Lutheran
The Whitworth Pirates completed play at the U.S. Bank – Whitworth Maui Classic, defeating California Lutheran 68-55 on Thursday.
James Jones scored 16 points to lead the Pirates (4-0), who went 2-0 in the tournament. Ryan Symes added 13 points and Kevin Hasenfus scored 12 points to go with 10 rebounds. Also in double figures were Jon Young with 11 points and Colin Willemsen with 10. Bryan Williams had eight assists.
Lewis & Clark defeated Bethany Lutheran 96-73 and Concordia of California defeated George Fox 84-61 in Thursday’s other games.

Vandals’ volleyball season ends
New Mexico State defeated Idaho 30-19, 30-19, 30-13 in the second round of the Western Athletic Conference tournament at Reno, Nev.
The Vandals were out hit .352 to .055.
Lauren Mathis had a team high with nine kills for Idaho.
NIC tournament begins today
The North Idaho College men’s and women’s basketball teams are both 3-2, records they’ll try to improve upon at the Pepsi Cardinal Classic tonight and Saturday at Christianson Gym.
NIC’s men open against Grant MacEwan at 8 p.m. The visitors from Edmonton are 11-1. NBC Thunder faces United Tribes, of Bismarck, N.D, at 4 in the other men’s contest. NBC Thunder has several ex-Gonzaga Bulldogs, including former NIC standout Winston Brooks, Tony Skinner and Brian Michaelson.
The Cardinal women were short-handed in their three games at a tournament in Twin Falls last week. Center Paige McGowan was sidelined by a rib injury, but she will play this weekend. Forward Jessica Thielen has mononucleosis and will probably be out through Christmas. Forward Cassie Pilkinton (mono) is expected to play against Grant MacEwan (10-2) tonight at 6.
