Idaho tops San Jose State
Haley Larsen had 23 kills and five blocks to lead Idaho to a 22-30, 35-33, 30-27, 30-17 win over San Jose State (10-8, 1-4) in a Western Athletic Conference volleyball match Saturday in Moscow.
Saxony Brown also had a good game for the Vandals, recording 11 kills, 19 assists, two aces, five digs and six blocks. Idaho improves to 5-11 overall and 4-1 in the WAC.
•Erin Little had 13 kills and Katie Swoboda added 26 digs to lead Oregon (12-3, 2-3) to a 30-25, 30-21, 30-25 win over Washington State in a Pacific-10 match in Pullman. Brittany Johnson led the Cougars with nine kills and Corina Beyer added 18 assists.
Washington State is 13-7 overall and 1-5 in the Pac-10. The Cougars travel to Seattle Friday to play No. 5 Washington.
•Nicole Thometz had 17 kills and Kara Pein dished out 34 assists to lead Portland to a 30-14, 30-22, 30-28 win over Gonzaga in a West Coast Conference match in Portland. Becky Jones and Tianna Tuatagaloa combined for 15 kills for the Bulldogs and Heather Dunn added 27 assists.
Gonzaga is 5-13 overall and 0-3 in WCC play. The Bulldogs return home Thursday to host Santa Clara at 7 p.m. at the Martin Centre.
• Courtney Thompson had 40 assists and Tamari Miyashiro added 16 digs to guide Washington to a 30-14, 30-13, 30-15 win over Oregon State in a Pacific-10 match in Seattle. Alesha Deesing added 14 kills for the Huskies, who improve to 14-3 overall and 4-2 in the Pac-10.
•Addie Webster had 16 kills and Amanda Yausie added 38 assists to lead Eastern Washington to a 30-21, 30-22, 30-22 win over Montana in a Big Sky Conference match at Missoula. Webster added 18 digs for the Eagles, who improve to 10-7 overall and 3-5 in the conference.
•Jill Peacock had 17 kills and Melissa Dunn added 12 kills and 20 digs to lead Pacific to a 30-27, 23-30, 30-19, 20-30, 15-11 win over Whitworth in a Northwest Conference match at Whitworth. The Boxers came back from a 25-20 deficit to win the first game. Pacific used two Pirates attack errors and two aces to mount their comeback. Angie Florence led the Pirates with 16 kills, while Nicole Vander Meulen and Holly Tomlin added 13 kills each.
Cassie Moore had 28 digs and Holly Tomlin added 56 assists. Whitworth is 4-15 overall and 3-5 in the NWC.
Men’s soccer
CC Spokane (9-3-1, 8-2) beat Wenatchee Valley (3-7-1 NWAACC) 5-1 in at Spokane Falls Community College. Five different players scored for the Sasquatch, and Ryan Matern and Erik Kuno had two assists apiece. Jay Vela and Neil Bachman both scored their team-high ninth goals for CCS, which stands in second place in the East Division.
•Chris Johnson scored a goal in the 37th minute off an assist from Ryan Powers to lead Whitworth to a 1-0 win over Whitman in a Northwest Conference match in Walla Walla.
Women’s soccer
Freshman Megan Wells scored a goal in overtime to give North Idaho a 3-2 win over host Western Nevada in a non-conference match. Raquel Homan and Kim Pearce also scored goals for the Cardinals. North Idaho outshot Western Nevada 21-13.
•Lindsay Hood scored in the 90th minute off an assist from Ashley Imes to give CC Spokane a 3-2 win over Wenatchee Valley in NWAACC play at SFCC. The Sasquatch outshot Wenatchee Valley 17-10. CCS will travel to Bremerton Friday to take on Olympic at 12:30.
•Jael Hagerott scored a goal off a penalty kick in the 24th minute to give Whitworth a 1-0 shutout of Whitman in a Northwest Conference match in Walla Walla. The Pirates held Whitman to six shots on goal.
Junior hockey
The Spokane Braves scored three goals in the third period and beat the Creston Thundercats in KIJHL action in Creston, British Columbia. Trevor Draper made 32 saves for Spokane.
