Food line excitement harpooned

Paul Turner The Spokesman-Review

Who says Spokane doesn’t go in for exotic cuisine?

Kristi Luttrull shared a story.

“We were at the Golden Corral for a birthday celebration, and my oldest son, Cody, came back from getting his food and said, ‘Do you know what they have out there — fried whale!’ “

Luttrull hadn’t noticed that during her own survey of the buffet options. So she asked Cody to elaborate.

“It’s fried orca,” he said.

Which is pretty unusual fare at most family-style restaurants.

Of course, what Cody actually saw was “okra.”

But for a second there…

“One TV-watcher’s bed time: Steve Cromwell’s young nephew said he usually turns in at 8 o’clock, “7 Central.”

“Tribal rites: Well, my stint as a chaperone at the big dance at Ferris High School Saturday night wasn’t all that eventful. I was assigned the task of seeing that no one went out or came in through a side exit at the gym.

As I never left my post during the entire three hours, I can report, “Mission accomplished.”

Here are a dozen random observations.

1. It was dark, loud and, thanks in part to the fog machine, slightly surreal.

2. Almost all of the hundreds of kids were in dress-up, semiformal attire. They looked great.

3. The recorded music playlist was eclectic and even included several songs I recognized.

4. One teenage girl asked me to dance. “Wanna shake it?”

I politely declined.

5. Lots of cell phones and digital cameras.

6. One of my fellow chaperones gave me a religious tract.

7. Girls in groups still scurry from place to place for no apparent reason.

8. Someone wanting to be offended by suggestive dance styles could have gotten offended, I suppose.

9. Every kid I actually spoke with struck me as someone a parent should be proud of.

10. One boy did seem to be a little too into the hip-thrusting conga-line thing.

11. I kept wondering if any of the dancers were having a night they will remember.

12. Most of the kids appeared to have fun, and that seemed like the most important thing.

“Slice answer: “Yes, we will have a white Christmas this year,” wrote Heather York of Colfax. “How do I know? My husband, Kyle, lives to ride his snowmobile and was unable to last year because I was pregnant and on bed rest. I wouldn’t let him get more than 30 minutes away from me because I was worried he would miss the delivery.

“He claims it was the best snow we had in years and he had to miss it. So, I pray that we have great snow, not only during the holidays but the entire winter so I don’t have to hear about it.”

“Today’s Slice question: When did you realize tattoos had gone mainstream?
