Shock knot series

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Deanna Nolan scored 21 points and Katie Smith scored all 16 of her points in the second half to help the Detroit Shock even the WNBA finals at a game apiece with a 73-63 win over the Sacramento Monarchs on Friday.

For the better part of three quarters, it looked like the Monarchs would take a 2-0 lead back to Sacramento for Game 3 on Sunday, but Smith wouldn’t let that happen.

Her 3-pointer with 2 seconds remaining in the third quarter pulled the Shock – who had trailed by as many as 11 points earlier in the game – within 54-48.

The defending champion Monarchs, who were led by Yolanda Griffith’s 14 points and eight rebounds, held a 42-33 halftime lead.
