Angry Rebels
UNLV players, angry that officials ruled Shane Steichen’s pass into the end zone on the final play was incomplete, refused to leave the field for about 15 minutes Saturday following Iowa State’s 16-10 victory in Ames, Iowa.
The Rebels congregated at midfield, yelling at officials and shaking their helmets before coaches were finally able to convince them to head to the locker room.
The bizarre sequence of events began on the game’s second-to-last play, when UNLV’s Casey Flair recovered his fumble on the Iowa State 11 following a catch. The Cyclones asked for a replay to determine whether Flair had made the catch, but the call was upheld and the Rebels had one last shot with 7 seconds left.
Steichen threw the ball into a gaggle of players at the back of the end zone. The players from Iowa State acted as if the game was over, but Aaron Straiten then came out of the end zone holding the ball. Officials ruled that the pass was incomplete, setting off the protests from UNLV.
Moss returns for Miami
Miami running back Tyrone Moss returned to the lineup in Miami, his first action since tearing a left knee ligament 10 months ago. Moss wasn’t expected to play against Florida A&M, with coach Larry Coker suggesting earlier in the week that the team’s leading returning rusher would probably make his season debut either next weekend at Louisville, or possibly Sept. 30 at home against Houston.
He entered with 8:06 left in the second quarter, catching a 7-yard pass from Kyle Wright on his first play – and drawing a loud ovation when his name was announced for the first time.
Road woes
Rutgers handed Illinois its 15th straight road loss, beating the Illini 33-0. Illinois has been outscored 110-5 in its last three road losses.
Snapped
T.J. Brown passed for a career-high 235 yards and two touchdowns as Butler beat Hanover 30-20, snapping an 18-game losing streak since 2004.
