Panhandle Picks with Greg Lee

The Spokesman-Review

They’re smiling at Hudson’s Hamburgers these days, especially when they see me come through the doors.

For the second time in three weeks, the guest beat yours truly. Rusty Reyes picked 10 of 14 games correctly, edging the Scribe by one. In so doing, Reyes also tied up the chase for the season title. The scoreboard reads: Lee 21-11 (.678), guests 21-11 (.678).

My guest this week is Sean Dorris, who resigned last spring after two seasons as head football coach at Sandpoint. He doesn’t figure to return to coaching anytime soon. If he does return, he wants to try his hand in college.

Coeur d’Alene vs. Mead (tiebreaker): This had the makings of a big showdown until the Vikings fell 34-21 at Centennial and the Panthers were knocked off 21-6 by Lewis and Clark. Mead is trying to find a starting quarterback. CdA has a standout behind center. I’ll go with the proven QB. CdA 27, Mead 21.

Guest: The question for CdA is can it protect (quarterback Shea) Vucinich? Mead will have to play a great game to slow down the Viking passing game. The bottom line for Mead is keeping the Viking offense off the field. CdA 28, Mead 21.

Lake City at Sandpoint: The winless 4A Bulldogs have lost three straight games against 5A teams, and they get to top it off by taking on the top-ranked 5A team. LC 42, Sandpoint 13.

Guest: The ‘Dogs are hungry for a win. Their young defense is improving and their offense is ready for a breakout game. Unfortunately, Sandpoint is playing the best team in the state. Van (Troxel, LC coach) has the T-Wolf train rolling. LC 35, Sandpoint 21.

Cheney at Post Falls: The Trojans begin a four-week stretch where they can build up some momentum before finishing with 5A foes Lake City, Lewiston and Coeur d’Alene in that order. PF 28, Cheney 14.

Guest: Post Falls and coach (Jeff) Hinz are limping back from a defeat in Boise (Hinz tore a meniscus getting out of bed at football camp this summer). Look for the Trojans to regain their swagger and establish their running game early. PF 35, Cheney 7.
