Broncos hoist Nash’s jersey

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara University retired Steve Nash’s jersey when the two-time NBA Most Valuable Player and 1996 graduate spoke at the school’s convocation ceremony Monday.

A banner honoring the Phoenix Suns guard was hung in the rafters at the Leavey Center, and Nash’s No. 11 jersey was raised on the opposite end of the gym. Nash is the first Santa Clara athlete whose jersey has been raised.

Nash was recruited by coach Dick Davey, who still heads the Santa Clara program, and arrived from Canada in 1992. He led the Broncos to three berths in the NCAA tournament and two regular-season West Coast Conference titles, winning the WCC’s Player of the Year award in 1995 and 1996.

Los Angeles awarded worlds

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – Los Angeles was awarded figure skating’s 2009 world championships, which will serve as a qualifier for the Vancouver Olympics.

Spokane, which will host the 2007 Nationals Jan. 21-28, was a finalist with Cleveland and Los Angeles among U.S. cities to host the worlds. In the final process involving international cities, Los Angeles beat out bids from Helsinki, Finland, and Budapest, Hungary.

Today’s question

Oklahoma football over the top?

These Sooners aren’t going away quietly.

Because of some questionable calls by Pac-10 officials in last Saturday’s Oklahoma-Oregon game, Sooners coach Bob Stoops is talking about canceling a game with Washington in 2008 unless the Pac-10 changes its officiating policy.

Should Sooner fans just shut up and take it or should they continue shouting from the rooftops?
