Gonzaga rallies to topple WSU
Shawn Wayt hit a three-run home run to cap a five-run sixth inning as Gonzaga topped Washington State 12-6 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.
Jim Murphy hit a two-run double in the first as the Cougars (16-14) took a 4-0 lead, but the Bulldogs (21-16) answered back, scoring four runs in the third to tie the game.
Gonzaga’s Jeremy Stumetz (2-1) earned the win.
Softball
CC Spokane swept visiting Big Bend (12-11, 7-7) in a NWAACC doubleheader.
Amber Keeler allowed one run on four hits as the Sasquatch won the first game 6-1. Keeler also had three hits and drove in four runs.
In the second game, Theresa Tveit hit two home runs and finished with four RBIs as CCS won 10-2. Chantel Booker earned the win for the Sasquatch after allowing three hits while striking out seven.
Whitney Dilworth added two runs for CCS (10-12, 6-6).
Golf
The Gonzaga men shot a final-round 291 and finished in 14th place at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Talking Stick Golf Course in Phoenix.
Freshman Brandon Crick led the Bulldogs after shooting a final-round 71 and finishing in a five-way tie for 22nd. Idaho placed 17th.
•Idaho sophomore Russell Grove was named Western Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week for his second-place finish at last week’s OGIA Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.
Track and field
Whitworth’s Kristin Dormaier placed second in the heptathlon while teammate Ben Spaun took third in the decathlon at the Norwest Conference Multi-Event Championships at Willamette University in Salem, Ore.
Dormaier posted an NCAA provisional qualifying score of 4,133 while Spaun scored 6,416 points to improve his provisional NCAA qualification.
Colville graduate and Puget Sound team member Caitlin McGrane finished fourth in the heptathlon with 3,947 points.
