Locally: chlademan earns place in Hall of Fame

Karl Schlademan, who coached men’s track and field and cross country at Washington State University from 1927-40, will be inducted in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in a ceremony Dec. 18 in Phoenix.

On arriving at WSU in 1927, Schlademan built the Cougars into a national contender on the track. Washington State won seven consecutive Northern Division titles and had a 39-14 dual meet record under Schlademan.

Additionally, Schlademan led the Cougars to four top-10 finishes at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and sprinter Lee Orr won a national collegiate title in the 440-yard dash in 1940, Schlademan’s final season in Pullman.

Schlademan, who died in 1980 at the age of 90, also coached at Kansas from 1919-26 and Michigan State from 1940-58.

Awards

Nine Whitworth University and two Washington State University tennis players were named Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar Athletes for the 2006-07 season.

The Whitworth men had six players honored including Ed Anegon, Scott Bourne, Michael Carlson, Scott Donnell, Kellen Oetgen and Trevor Strang.

Linh Aven, Betsy Johnson and Rachael McCoola were the Pirate women honored.

Washington State’s Ekaterina Burduli and Marjolein van de Ven were also named ITA Scholar Athletes.

To earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must be a varsity letter winner and hold a 3.5 grade point average or higher.

Women’s soccer

Dane Christian will be a volunteer assistant coach for Washington State after recently serving as an assistant varsity girl’s coach at Moscow High School.

“Head coach George Hageage announced that the Eastern Washington University named 1993 Gonzaga graduate Julio Morales as new assistant coach.

Rowing

Four Gonzaga University men and four women competed at the 125th Royal Canadian Henley Regatta Aug. 7-12 on the Martindale Pond in St. Catherines, Ontario.

Juniors Brian Franceschi, Greg Malman, Brendan McCarthy and Pat Swihart were the male participants while recent graduate Nicole Aadland-Lewis, seniors Kelly Steinhaus and Cory Nelson and sophomore Liz Moore were the female participants.

In the Senior B men’s eight, McCarthy and Swihart helped the Penn Athletic Club capture Henley Gold, finishing nearly two seconds ahead of second-place finisher Vesper BC.

In the Senior B women’s eight, Aadland-Lewis and Nelson, members of the Vesper BC boat, captured the Henley Gold. Vesper BC won the race with a time of 6 minutes, 41.45 seconds, over eleven seconds ahead of second-place finisher Boston RC (6:52.61).

Baseball

Washington State University will hold its annual alumni weekend Oct 5-7.

Festivities begin Oct. 5 with the Crimson vs. Gray scrimmage at 5 p.m. followed by an alumni, family and friends barbecue.

The Cougar Alumni Game takes place the following day at 10 a.m.

The weekend concludes with a golf tournament at the University of Idaho Golf Course on Oct. 7.
