The Spokesman-Review

Rangers 30-9, Orioles 3-7: At Baltimore, Texas became the first team in 110 years to score 30 runs in a game, setting an American League record in a rout of Baltimore. In the second game, Travis Metcalf, a member of the 2004 Spokane Indians, drove in four runs and the Rangers used a three-run eighth for a sweep. Texas also set an A.L. record for runs in a doubleheader, surpassing the 36 scored by Detroit in 1937.

Yankees 8, Angels 2: At Anaheim, Calif., Andy Pettitte won his fifth consecutive start and New York salvaged the finale of its three-game series against Los Angeles, which remained two games ahead of Seattle in the West. The Yankees are five games behind Boston in the East.

Indians 11, Tigers 8: At Detroit, Franklin Gutierrez hit a three-run homer and Cleveland increased its Central Division lead to 1 1/2 games by defeating Detroit.

Devil Rays 2, Red Sox 1: At St. Petersburg, Fla., B.J. Upton hit a two-run homer and Tampa Bay beat Boston’s Daisuke Matsuzaka for the third time this season.

Royals 7, White Sox 6: At Chicago, Billy Butler homered and drove in three runs to back Brian Bannister’s strong outing, and Kansas City held off Chicago. Kansas City ended a three-game skid and kept the White Sox from completing their first series sweep at home since Aug. 11-13, 2006, against Detroit.

Athletics 4, Blue Jays 1: At Toronto, Esteban Loaiza won in his season debut by outpitching A.J. Burnett, and Oakland completed a three-game sweep. Oakland has won four straight and eight of 10, reaching .500 for the first time since the All-Star break.
