United States wins Davis Cup

The United States won its first Davis Cup title since 1995 behind a convincing doubles victory Saturday by brothers Bob and Mike Bryan.

The Bryans cruised to a 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-2 over Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko and Igor Andreev on the indoor hard court at Portland’s Memorial Coliseum as the U.S. won the first three matches in the best-of-5 final.

The once-dominant United States had not won the Davis Cup in 12 years, the longest span without an American victory. Pete Sampras last led the team to victory over Russia on clay in Moscow.

Miles will remain LSU coach

Les Miles insists he will remain LSU’s football coach despite all the speculation he would bolt for Michigan.

“I am the head coach at LSU. I will be the head coach at LSU,” Miles said. “I have no interest in talking to anybody else.”

LSU senior associate athletic director Herb Vincent said he later asked Miles whether the coach’s statement applied to Michigan. Vincent said Miles told him it did – he was not going to Michigan.

LSU athletic director Skip Bertman said Miles and LSU chancellor Sean O’Keefe already have worked out a contract “they’re happy with,” but it has not yet been signed.

Also, it has been reported that LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini will accept the Nebraska coaching job. However, Pelini refused to confirm those reports.

Jordan inspires 0-11 Dolphins

By the time his career ended, the greatest basketball player of all time had piled up six NBA titles.

A champion? Yes, Michael Jordan defines the term.

So when His Airness walked into a meeting room at the Miami Dolphins’ training facility Thursday to address the NFL’s only winless team, it goes without saying what type of an impact it had.

“Immediately, every guy – regardless of how good they are in football or what they’ve accomplished – is going to listen to him,” Miami kicker Jay Feely said.

“Jordan talked about the way in which you need to be a champion, what you need to do to get the most out of your team,” Feely said. “From the smallest guy to the biggest guy, every role is important.”

Medicine Hat trips Chiefs

One night after they set a franchise record for the fewest combined penalty minutes in a 2-1 overtime win over the Calgary Hitmen, the Spokane Chiefs spent most of the night in the box. Spokane allowed four power-play goals in its 4-3 loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers.
