Stars shine in shootout

Niklas Hagman’s shootout backhander powered the Dallas Stars to a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday night in Columbus, Ohio.

Hagman, the 10th player in the shootout, swooped in on goalie Pascal Leclaire and flicked a backhander past him.

•Stars right wing Jere Lehtinen could be out eight to 10 weeks because of an abdominal injury that required surgery.

The Stars put him on injured reserve and activated defenseman Mattias Norstrom.

Hurricanes 4, Rangers 0: At New York, Cory Stillman had two goals, Matt Cullen two assists and Cam Ward earned his second shutout of the season as Carolina beat the Rangers.

Ward stopped 28 shots for his fourth NHL shutout.

Bruins 3, Islanders 1: At Uniondale, N.Y., Tim Thomas stopped 33 shots to help Boston win over the Islanders.

Glen Murray, Petteri Nokelainen and Chuck Kobasew scored for Boston.

Penguins 3, Coyotes 1: At Pittsburgh, Kris Letang scored the go-ahead goal off Sidney Crosby’s pass midway through the third period and the Penguins beat Phoenix.

Pittsburgh got goals from rookies Letang and Tyler Kennedy in the final nine minutes.

Sharks 3, Avalanche 2: At Denver, Steve Bernier, Milan Michalek and Mike Grier each scored, and Evgeni Nabokov made 33 saves to lead San Jose over Colorado.

Jose Theodore had 25 saves, and Milan Hejduk and Andrew Brunette had goals for Colorado.

Oilers 4, Kings 3 (SO): At Los Angeles, Mathieu Garon made 31 saves in regulation and stopped all three shots he faced in the shootout, leading Edmonton over the Kings in his return to Staples Center.

The Oilers are a league-best 7-1 in shootouts.

Off the ice

Philadelphia forward Riley Cote was suspended for three games by the NHL, the fifth Flyers player disciplined by the league this season for illegal hits. Cote was given a match penalty for a head shot that sent Dallas forward Mat Niskanen into the boards in the third period of the Stars’ 4-1 win over the Flyers on Saturday night. … Nashville Predators forward Scott Nichol has been suspended five games by the NHL for a blow to the head of Montreal defenseman Patrice Brisebois.
