Spokane bound?

The Bears appeared headed for a top four seed but probably won’t stay out west if Stanford is the class of the coast. Cal returned four starters from last year’s 23-9 team that reached the NCAA tournament.

Junior Devanei Hampton is the reigning – and Cal’s first – Pac-10 Player of the Year but missed the first eight games after November knee surgery. She was joined on the All-Conference team by junior Ashley Walker, who is only player in the league averaging a double-double at 18.1 points and 10.4 rebounds. Also back is junior guard Alexis Gray-Lawson, who was the Freshman of the Year but missed all but nine games a year ago with an ACL injury.

Joanna Boyle, a Duke assistant, turned Cal around quickly, taking over an 11-18 team to go 18-13 and make the NCAA tournament in her first year, 2005-06.

Dave Trimmer’s projected top seeds: UConn, Tennessee, Stanford, North Carolina
