Miami heats up
For the Miami Heat, this was a night of comebacks.
First, coach Pat Riley said he’ll return after missing six weeks because of knee and hip surgeries. Then Dwyane Wade shook off a bruised left shoulder and outscored Portland by himself in the final quarter.
Now, the Heat’s long trip back to .500 is complete, too. Wade had 35 points and the Heat beat Portland 104-85 Tuesday night in Miami, giving the Heat seven wins in eight games entering the All-Star break.
Wade had 16 of his points in the final quarter, one more than the Trail Blazers managed as a team, and almost single-handedly decided things with three straight baskets in an 88-second span early in the period.
When the Heat resume play next week, Riley will be back on the sideline. He left the team Jan. 3 to address his medical issues. Riley announced his plans to return 45 minutes before game time.
Brandon Roy had 15 points for Portland, but managed only two on 1-for-8 shooting in the final three quarters.
Knicks 107, Lakers 106: At Los Angeles, Eddy Curry scored four of his 19 points in the final minute, including a go-ahead dunk with 7.1 seconds remaining, and New York beat the Lakers.
Kobe Bryant made a short jumper with 29.9 seconds left to put the Lakers ahead, but Curry scored off a lob pass from Jamal Crawford to give the Knicks their third win in four games.
Raptors 112, Bulls 111: At Chicago, Chris Bosh sank two free throws with 2.1 seconds left and Toronto blew a 12-point, fourth-quarter lead before recovering to beat the Bulls.
The victory was the 28th for Toronto, giving the Raptors one more win than all of last season. Andrea Bargnani added 22 points for Toronto.
Rockets 109, Kings 104 (OT): At Houston, Tracy McGrady scored 28 points and had 12 assists as the Rockets overcame Ron Artest’s big night to beat Sacramento in overtime.
Artest matched his career high with 39 points, hitting 12 of 23 shots and going 10 for 11 from the free-throw line. Artest also had eight rebounds.
Spurs 107, Nets 82: At East Rutherford, N.J., Tim Duncan scored seven of his 21 points in a 20-point San Antonio spurt to start the second quarter and the Spurs took advantage of the absence of All-Star Jason Kidd to beat New Jersey.
Kidd will miss final two games before the All-Star break with a lower back strain. His status for the NBA midseason classic Sunday in Las Vegas is uncertain.
Grizzlies 108, Hornets 104: At Memphis, Tenn., Hakim Warrick scored 15 points, including six straight in a key stretch late in the fourth quarter, and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Grizzlies past New Orleans.
Mike Miller scored 22 points to lead Memphis. Chucky Atkins added 19, Rudy Gay had 18, and Junior Harrington and Pau Gasol 11 each.
Mavericks 99, Bucks 93: At Milwaukee, Dirk Nowitzki had 38 points and 11 rebounds and Dallas overcame a 16-point, second-half deficit to beat the Bucks for an eighth straight win.
Dallas, with the NBA’s best record at 43-9, outscored the Bucks 28-11 in the fourth quarter as Milwaukee didn’t hit a field goal in the final 7:05.
