Flyers knock out host Rangers

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Scottie Upshall scored a key goal in his Philadelphia debut and the physical Flyers beat the Rangers 5-3 Saturday in New York, in a game that saw the Rangers’ Brendan Shanahan taken off the ice on a stretcher after a collision with Mike Knuble.

The win came in the Flyers’ first game following the trade of captain Peter Forsberg, who was making his debut with the Nashville Predators later.

The loss could be costly for the Rangers. Shanahan was knocked unconscious in the third period following a hard collision with Knuble.

Shanahan skated toward the bench as Knuble came the other way. Neither player saw the other and they slammed shoulder-to-shoulder. Shanahan went flying backward and struck his head against the ice when he fell 7:27 into the third period.

X-rays and a CT scan were taken on Shanahan at St. Vincent’s Hospital. All the tests were negative, but Shanahan was to be kept overnight for observation. The Rangers said he was awake, alert and moving all his extremities.

New York also played the final period without goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who injured his left shoulder making a save, and defenseman Marek Malik.

Senators 5, Thrashers 3: At Ottawa, Dean McAmmond scored with just more than 4 minutes remaining in regulation to cap a third-period comeback and lift Ottawa to victory over Atlanta.
