Vandy shocks Florida
The top-ranked Florida Gators finally fell into a hole they couldn’t dig themselves out of Saturday.
Derrick Byars and Shan Foster each scored 24 points, and Vanderbilt snapped the nation’s longest winning streak by upsetting the Gators 83-70 in Nashville, Tenn.
Florida (24-3, 11-1) had won 17 straight games and needed a victory to clinch at least a share of the Southeastern Conference’s Eastern Division and the overall league title. They also had won seven straight against the Commodores.
But Vanderbilt (18-8, 8-4) has been one of the country’s best against ranked opponents this season. Students poured onto the court at Memorial Gym as the Commodores pulled off their first victory over a top-ranked team since Jan. 13, 1993, when they beat then-No. 1 Kentucky, and their sixth victory over a ranked team this season.
(3) Wisconsin 75, Penn State 49: At Madison, Wis., Alando Tucker shook off a slow start and scored 22 points to lead the Badgers (26-2, 12-1 Big Ten) to a victory over the Nittany Lions (10-15, 1-11).
Geary Claxton led Penn State with 15 points.
(4) North Carolina 77, (21) Boston College 72: At Boston, Tyler Hansbrough scored 17 and Ty Lawson had 13 points with seven assists and six rebounds to lead the Tar Heels (23-4, 9-3 ACC) to a victory over the Eagles (18-8, 9-4).
(6) Texas A&M 56, Oklahoma 49: At Norman, Okla., Joseph Jones and Acie Law scored 21 points each and the Aggies (22-4, 10-2 Big 12) rebounded from their second conference loss to beat the Sooners (15-10, 6-6).
David Godbold made a career-high five 3-pointers in seven attempts and scored a career-high 20 points for Oklahoma.
(9) Kansas 92, Nebraska 39: At Lawrence, Kan., Brandon Rush and Darrell Arthur scored 13 points each and led the Jayhawks (23-4, 10-2 Big 12) to a rout of the Cornhuskers (15-10, 4-7), who suffered one of the worst defeats in their history.
Louisville 61, (12) Marquette 59: At Milwaukee, Jerry Smith hit a 3-pointer as time expired to give the Cardinals (19-8, 9-4) a comeback victory over the Golden Eagles (21-7, 8-5).
Smith, a freshman, scored all nine of his points on 3-pointers in the final 3:04 as Louisville took sole possession of third place in the Big East.
(16) Southern Illinois 68, (13) Butler 64: At Indianapolis, Jamaal Tatum scored 20 points and the Salukis (24-5) defeated the Bulldogs (24-4).
Top scorer A.J. Graves, who was sick, finished with five points in Butler’s second loss in three games.
(14) Georgetown 58, Villanova 55: At Philadelphia, Jeff Green scored 19 points and hit the game-winning shot with 19.8 seconds left to lift the Hoyas (20-5, 10-2 Big East) to a victory over the Wildcats (18-8, 6-6), the Hoyas’ ninth straight win.
Scottie Reynolds scored 18 points and Curtis Sumpter had 15 for Villanova.
(17) Air Force 67, Colorado State 58: At Air Force Academy, Colo., Dan Nwaelele returned from a first-half ankle injury and finished with 18 points to lead the Falcons (23-4, 10-3 MWC) past the Rams (15-10, 5-8), extending the nation’s longest home-court winning streak to 30.
Matt McCraw added 15 points for the Falcons.
Missouri 75, (18) Oklahoma State 64: At Stillwater, Okla., Keon Lawrence scored 18 points and Matt Lawrence added 15 off five 3-pointers as the Tigers (16-9, 5-7 Big 12) upset the Cowboys (19-7, 5-6) for their first win over a ranked foe under first-year coach Mike Anderson.
Mario Boggan and JamesOn Curry each scored 16 and Kenny Cooper added 10 for the Cowboys.
(25) Alabama 72, (20) Kentucky 61: At Tuscaloosa, Ala., Richard Hendrix had 16 points and nine rebounds, and the Crimson Tide (19-7, 6-6 SEC) fought off several rallies for a win over the Wildcats (18-8, 7-5), handing Kentucky its third straight loss.
Ronald Steele finished with 15 points and seven assists for Alabama.
(23) West Virginia 81, Seton Hall 71: At Morgantown, W. Va., Frank Young scored seven of his 18 points during a key second-half run to help the Mountaineers (20-6, 8-5 Big East) beat the Pirates (12-13, 3-9).
Eugene Harvey scored 19 points before fouling out for Seton Hall.
Michigan 58, (24) Indiana 55: At Ann Arbor, Mich., Dion Harris had 16 points and Jerret Smith made up for a key turnover with a pair of late free throws as the Wolverines (18-9, 6-6 Big Ten) beat the Hoosiers (17-8, 7-5).
Courtney Sims had 13 points for Michigan and Smith added 12.
