Virginia Tech takes down fifth-ranked Duke
Jamon Gordon’s basket with 31 seconds left in overtime Saturday gave Virginia Tech the lead, and Deron Washington blocked Greg Paulus’ 3-point shot as time expired to give the Hokies a 69-67 victory over No. 5 Duke in Durham, N.C.
The Hokies (11-4, 1-0 ACC) trailed 67-66 when they called a timeout with 43 seconds remaining. They worked the ball to Gordon, who drove to the basket and floated a shot over the Blue Devil (13-2, 0-1) defense for a 68-67 lead.
(3) Florida 67, Georgia 51: At Gainesville, Fla., Corey Brewer had 19 points and 10 rebounds for his second career double-double. He also had seven assists and four steals as the Gators (14-2, 1-0 SEC) defeated the Bulldogs (8-5, 0-1).
(4) Wisconsin 68, Minnesota 45: At Madison, Wis., the Badgers (15-1, 1-0 Big Ten) trailed early, but recovered from a slow start to take a 17-point lead at halftime. Then the Badgers held the Gophers (7-9, 1-1) scoreless for the first 6 1/2 minutes of the second half for the easy victory.
(6) Ohio State 62, Illinois 44: At Champaign, Ill., Greg Oden didn’t score a point until the second half, but Buckeyes guards took up the slack with three scoring in double figures as Ohio State (13-2, 2-0 Big Ten) beat the Illini (12-5, 0-2).
Arkansas 88, (8) Alabama 61: At Fayetteville, Ark., Gary Ervin had 18 points and 11 assists to lead the Razorbacks (12-3, 1-0 SEC) in a rout of the Crimson Tide (13-2, 0-1).
(11) Texas A&M 69, Kansas State 65: At College Station, Texas, Acie Law scored 18 points, including two late free throws, to lead the Aggies (13-2, 1-0 Big 12) to a win over the Wildcats (10-5, 0-1).
(12) Oklahoma State 81, Baylor 77: At Stillwater, Okla., Mario Boggan overcame foul trouble to score 26 points and grab 13 rebounds – his fourth double-double of the season – and the Cowboys (15-1, 1-0 Big 12) beat the Bears (10-4, 0-1).
(13) Butler 73, Wright State 42: At Indianapolis, A.J. Graves scored 19 points, leading the Bulldogs (14-1, 3-0 Horizon League) to a win over the Raiders (9-7, 2-1).
(14) LSU 66, (18) Connecticut 49: At Baton Rouge, La., Glen Davis and Tasmin Mitchell each scored 16 points as the Tigers (11-3) overcame a sloppy start to defeat the Huskies (12-2).
Georgetown 66, (17) Notre Dame 48: At Washington, the Hoyas (11-3, 1-0 Big East) took an 18-2 lead in the opening minutes and never looked back. Roy Hibbert scored 18 points on 8-for-9 shooting as the Hoyas beat the Irish (13-2, 1-1).
(20) Air Force 56, UNLV 50: At Air Force Academy, Colo., Nick Welch scored on a drive as the shot clock expired to give the Falcons (15-1, 2-0 MWC) a six-point lead as Air Force held on to beat the Rebels (14-3, 1-1).
(23) Clemson 75, Georgia Tech 74: At Clemson, James Mays had 16 points, including the game-winning layup with 2.2 seconds to go, as the Tigers (16-0, 2-0 ACC) became the Division I’s only unbeaten team with a victory over the Yellow Jackets (11-4, 0-2).
(25) West Virginia 73, St. John’s 46: At Morgantown, W. Va., Darris Nichols scored a career-high 20 points and the Mountaineers (13-1, 3-0 Big East) defeated the Red Storm (10-5, 1-1) for their eighth straight win.
