GSL Girls Basketball: Pirates rally past Bears
Rogers rallied from a double-digit, fourth-quarter deficit Friday night to defeat Central Valley 54-51 for its third Greater Spokane League girls basketball win.
That is the most victories in a season for the Pirates (3-12) since 1998 and came after two losses of three or fewer points.
The host Bears (4-11) led 28-18 at intermission and were still ahead by double figures with 6 minutes remaining.
Denisha Whitehead, who finished with 16 points, made four late free throws for Rogers, her final two after CV’s Tristina Kline scored to cut the lead to 52-51 with 6 seconds left.
Rogers’ last victory over Central Valley was Dec. 17, 1988, and it was only the fourth in 65 meetings during their basketball history.
D’Erica Jones and Rikeya Crossley had 14 points apiece for Rogers. Kelsey Matthews scored 15 and Justine Bowman 14 for the Bears.
Shadle Park 52, Ferris 46: The visiting Highlanders (10-4), trailed early by as many as eight points before overcoming the Saxons (7-7). A flurry of fouls sent Shadle to the line 16 times in the second period. Lexi Bishop finished the game with 25 points. Ferris’ Jenna Galloway scored 11 points before fouling out.
University 65, Gonzaga Prep 41: The second-place Titans (13-2) pulled away from the visiting Bullpups (9-5) in the third quarter on the shooting of Riki Schiermeister and Angie Bjorklund. Schiermeister hit four 3-pointers en route to a season-high 21 points. Bjorklund, who set the GSL single-season record, with 378 points, finished with 17. Dara Zack added 17 for the Titans. Tara Cronin led the Bullpups with 15.
Lewis and Clark 69, East Valley 49: Katelan Redmon matched her season high of 26 points, had 13 rebounds and five steals to lead the host Tigers (14-0) past the Knights (4-9). EV was 17 for 17 from the free-throw line, including eight by Ashley Grater, who shared team scoring honors at 12 with Eleaya Schuerch.
Mead 66, Mt. Spokane 34: Freshman Alexis Olgard totaled 13 points, nine rebounds and seven blocked shots as the host Panthers (12-3) beat the Wildcats (2-12). Mead’s Ricole Rogers came off the bench and was 5 for 5 from the field, with 11 points.
