TOP 25: Tech’s Dora dooms Kansas again
Darryl Dora scored 19 points to lead Texas Tech (14-5, 3-1 Big 12) to a 69-64 victory over No. 5 Kansas (16-3, 3-1) Saturday in Lubbock, Texas, snapping the Jayhawks’ 10-game win streak.
It was the second time Tech defeated Kansas when it came to Lubbock as a Top 10 team, and Dora was the difference the last time. In February 2005, Dora hit a 3-pointer with 3.6 seconds remaining in the second overtime to beat then-No.2 Kansas 80-79.
Alan Voskuil tipped in a rebound with 35 seconds remaining after Jay Jackson missed a shot to seal the win. After Kansas missed two 3-point attempts, Tech got the rebound and passed the ball to a wide-open Martin Zeno, who dunked it to cap the upset.
(1) Florida 79, Mississippi 70: At Gainesville, Fla., Joakim Noah finished with a season-high 24 points and helped the top-ranked Gators (17-2, 4-0 Southeastern Conference) avoid a near collapse with a victory over the pesky Rebels (12-7, 1-4).
The defending national champions led 53-28 early in the second half and looked like they would cruise to their 10th consecutive win. But the Rebels used a 29-11 run over a 10-minute span to make it a close game in the final 8 minutes.
(2) Wisconsin 71, Illinois 64: At Champaign, Ill., Kammron Taylor scored 20 points and the Badgers (19-1, 5-0 Big Ten) closed with a 10-2 run to beat the Illini (14-7, 2-4).
Greg Stiemsma, who finished with 12 points, hit two free throws to give Wisconsin the lead for good at 63-62. The Badgers were 18 for 21 (86 percent) on free throws, while Illinois was 14 for 23 (61 percent).
(4) North Carolina 77, Georgia Tech 61: At Chapel Hill, Tyler Hansbrough scored 24 points and the Tar Heels (17-2, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) held the Yellow Jackets (13-5, 2-3) to their lowest-scoring game of the season in a victory.
The Tar Heels used a 25-10 second-half run to pull away for their 14th win in 15 games and join Kentucky as the only NCAA schools with 1,900 wins.
(7) Ohio St. 82, Iowa 63: At Columbus, Ohio, Greg Oden had a career-high 29 points – hitting 12 of 13 shots from the field – to lead the Buckeyes (16-3, 4-1 Big Ten) over the Hawkeyes (10-9, 2-3).
Oden also had 10 rebounds, one assist and two blocked shots while hitting all five of his free throws.
(8) Texas A&M 67, (12) Oklahoma 49: At College Station, Texas, Acie Law had 16 points, Antanas Kavaliauskas scored 14 despite having to twice sit down with injuries, and the Aggies (16-2, 4-0 Big 12) beat the Cowboys (16-3, 2-2).
The Aggies, who entered the game allowing the second-fewest points in the country, held Oklahoma State to its lowest score of the season.
(10) Alabama 78, Georgia 76: At Tuscaloosa, Ala., Ronald Steele’s off-balance jump shot as time expired lifted the Crimson Tide (14-3, 2-2 Southeastern Conference) to a victory over the Bulldogs (11-6, 3-2).
Steele moved inside the 3-point line then heaved the ball toward the basket to complete the Tide’s comeback from an 11-point deficit over the final 4:35.
(13) Air Force 56, San Diego St. 51: At Air Force Academy, Colo., Jacob Burtschi scored 23 points as the Falcons (18-2, 5-1 Mountain West Conference) held off a late San Diego State surge to win at home for the 26th straight time in a victory over the Aztecs (13-6, 2-3).
Air Force’s leading scorer, Dan Nwaelele, finished with 11 points, including a shot that gave Air Force back a lead with 45 seconds remaining that it wouldn’t lose again.
(14) Duke 79, N.C. State 56: At Raleigh, N.C., freshman Jon Scheyer scored 20 points and DeMarcus Nelson added 15 as the Blue Devils (16-3, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat the Wolfpack (11-7, 1-4).
Josh McRoberts and Greg Paulus each finished with 13 points.
Duke held N.C. State to 34 percent shooting and forced 20 turnovers that led to 25 points.
Arkansas 72, (16) LSU 52: At Fayetteville, Ark., Steven Hill scored a career-high 16 points – many of them on crowd-pleasing dunks – and the Razorbacks (13-6, 2-3 Southeastern Conference) rolled to an easy victory over the Tigers (13-5, 2-2).
LSU shot only 35 percent for the day.
Glen Davis led the Tigers with 16 points on 6-of-16 shooting. He had eight rebounds.
(17) Memphis 61, East Carolina 42: At Greenville, N.C., Jeremy Hunt scored 16 points to help the Tigers (15-3, 5-0) remain unbeaten in Conference USA play with a win over the Pirates (5-12, 0-4).
The teams combined to turn the ball over 27 times in the first half – 14 for the Pirates and 13 for Memphis.
(18) Butler 80, Wisconsin-Green Bay 59: At Indianapolis, A.J. Graves, back in the starting lineup for the first time in three games, scored 28 points and raised his nation-best free-throw streak to 63, leading the Bulldogs (17-2, 5-1 Horizon League) over the Phoenix (10-9, 2-4).
Graves was 5 of 8 on 3-pointers, missing both of his attempts in the second half. The Bulldogs were 24 of 25 from the foul line.
(19) Clemson 74, Boston College 54: At Clemson, S.C., Cliff Hammonds scored 17 points and the Tigers (18-2, 4-2) handed the Eagles (13-5, 5-1) their first Atlantic Coast Conference loss of the season.
Boston College’s Jared Dudley, who came in the ACC’s scoring leader, finished with just 13 points, nearly seven fewer than his 19.8 average.
Villanova 76, (21) Texas 69: At Philadelphia, freshman Scottie Reynolds scored 26 points and the Wildcats (13-5) held Texas’ first-year standout Kevin Durant to 12 in a victory over the Longhorns (13-5).
Reynolds was 12 for 13 from the free-throw line, including making 5 of 6 over the final 43 seconds after the Longhorns closed a 13-point deficit to two.
(22) Tennessee 64, South Carolina 61: At Knoxville, Tenn., JaJuan Smith scored 21 points and Wayne Chism added 14 points and 10 rebounds to help the Volunteers (14-5, 2-2 Southeastern Conference) defeat the Gamecocks .
The Volunteers lost the league’s leading scorer, Chris Lofton, in the second half to a right ankle sprain.
Vanderbilt 72, (25) Kentucky: At Lexington, Ky., Derrick Byars had 23 points, including 12 on 3-pointers, and the Commodores (13-6, 3-2 Southeastern Conference) beat the Wildcats (15-4, 4-1) for their third consecutive victory against the Wildcats and fourth win against a ranked opponent this season.
Vanderbilt was 11 for 23 on 3s, while Kentucky was 6 of 22.
