Sun Devils blaze past Trojans

Emily Westerberg (Central Valley) had 10 points and nine rebounds to lead No. 10 Arizona State to its sixth straight win, a 62-54 victory over Southern California on Sunday night at Tempe, Ariz.

Briann January (Lewis and Clark) added 12 points and four assists for the Sun Devils (18-2, 8-1 Pac-10), who snapped the Trojans’ five-game winning streak.

Eshaya Murphy had 11 points and 11 rebounds for Southern Cal, which outrebounded Arizona State 46-36.

The Sun Devils ran off 10 straight points, holding the Trojans (11-8, 5-4) scoreless for 5:13 in the second half to build a 58-44 lead with 3:49 remaining.

Arizona State held Murphy, the conference’s second-leading scorer at 18.6 points per game, to two points in the second half.

(2) North Carolina 86, North Carolina State 65: At Chapel Hill, N.C., Ivory Latta scored 20 points and made six 3-pointers to lead the Tar Heels (22-0, 6-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) past the Wolfpack (13-7, 2-3).

(3) Maryland 83, Wake Forest 60: At College Park, Md., Marissa Coleman had 21 points and six rebounds to lead the Terrapins (20-1, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) in a win over the Demon Deacons (8-11, 0-6).

(5) Ohio State 62, Illinois 52: At Columbus, Ohio, Jessica Davenport scored 22 points and reached 2,000 for her career, leading the Buckeyes (17-1, 6-0 Big Ten) past the Illini (14-5, 4-3).

(6) Connecticut 84, St. John’s 63: At New York, Mel Thomas made five 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 19 points to lead the Huskies (16-2, 6-0 Big East) past the Red Storm (5-12, 0-5).

(8) Louisiana State 61, Alabama 45: At Tuscaloosa, Ala., RaShonta LeBlanc converted two steals into breakaway layups to cap a 12-0 run in the Tigers’ (18-2, 4-1 Southeastern Conference) victory over the Crimson Tide (10-11, 0-6).

(11) George Washington 67, Xavier 55: At Cincinnati, Kenan Cole scored 15 points to lead the Colonials (16-2, 5-0 Atlantic 10) to a victory over the Musketeers (14-6, 2-2).

(12) Purdue 81, Indiana 58: At Bloomington, Ind., Katie Gearlds scored 21 points and Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton added 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Boilermakers (18-3, 7-0 Big Ten) beat the Hoosiers (13-7, 2-5).

(14) Vanderbilt 72, Georgia Tech 55: At Duluth, Ga., Caroline Williams scored six points to spark a 26-0 run and the Commodores (17-3) recovered from a nine-point deficit midway through the second half to beat the Yellow Jackets (11-8) in the Russell ACC/SEC Shootout.

(15) Louisville 53, Rutgers 50: At Louisville, Ky., Angel McCoughtry scored 20 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the Cardinals (18-2, 4-2 Big East) in a win over the Scarlet Knights (10-6, 5-2).

(16) Georgia 70, Florida State 65: At Duluth, Ga., Tasha Humphrey sparked a late 13-0 run and the Bulldogs (16-4) rallied for a win over the Seminoles (15-4) in the Russell ACC/SEC Shootout.

(22) Texas 64, (17) Texas A&M 45: At Austin, Texas, Tiffany Jackson scored 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and the Longhorns (14-5, 3-2 Big 12) used smothering defense to beat the Aggies (14-5, 3-2).

(23) Michigan State 67, Iowa 57: At East Lansing, Mich., Allyssa DeHaan scored 16 points and had seven blocks to lead the Spartans (15-4, 6-1 Big Ten) past the Hawkeyes (11-9, 6-1).
