Area roundup: Seventh-ranked Whitworth downs Pacific
Ryan Symes poured in 27 points to lead seventh-ranked Whitworth to a 77-69 victory over Pacific in a Northwest Conference men’s basketball game Friday at Forest Grove, Ore.
Kevin Hasenfus tallied 15 points and eight rebounds, Bryan Williams had 14 points and seven assists and chipped in 13 points for the Pirates (17-1, 8-1).
Don Harrison-Davis scored 29 points for the Boxers (8-9, 4-5).
Women’s basketball
Eshaya Murphy had 18 points and eight rebounds, and USC topped Washington State 65-47 in Pac-10 Conference action at Los Angeles.
Jamie Hagiya added 16 points, and Allison Jaskowiak chipped in 10 for the Trojans (12-8, 6-4), who forced WSU into 25 turnovers.
Katie Appleton scored 13, and Dani Montgomery added 12 to lead the Cougars (5-15, 1-9).

Brittney Osborn was the Eagles’ (6-14, 1-6) lone bright spot on offense with 20 points on 8-for-15 shooting. Sydney Benson finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles.

Wrestling
Brandon Rupp pinned North Idaho’s Rob Shaw at 285 pounds in the final match to give Western Wyoming a 27-22 win at the Northwest Wyoming Duals in Powell, Wyo.
Heinrich Barnes (141) and Evan Mattingly (197) earned pins for the Cardinals.
Track and field
Washington State’s Diana Pickler won the women’s pentathlon with an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 4,260 points at the Cougar Invite.
Julie Pickler, Diana’s twin sister, finished second in the pentathlon with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 4,003 points.
Idaho’s Matt Wauters broke the school record and the meet record in the men’s weight throw with a toss of 69 feet, 9 inches. The throw was a personal best for Wauters as well as an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
The meet concludes today. Competition begins at 9 a.m.
Junior hockey
Kyle Hammerstedt scored a pair of goals to lead Beaver Valley to a 6-4 KIJHL win over host Spokane. The Braves will face Princeton at 7:30 tonight at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
