What a year it was

Fall

Mead volleyball wins fourth straight and Ferris boys cross country third straight state championships.

Mead’s Panthers defeat fellow GSL team Lewis and Clark for the 4A volleyball title. Ferris’ Saxons lead a 1-2-3 cross country finish with a victory over Mead and Central Valley, while North Central captures the State 3A boys championship. Gonzaga Prep reaches the State 4A football semifinals for the second time in three years. Cheney and Mead girls and finalist Northwest Christian boys are top-four soccer finishers.

Team state champions – Colfax volleyball triumphs over Northeast A rival Lakeside for its third straight title and seventh finals berth in eight years; Sprague-Harrington 1B volleyball wins the schools’ first of three team titles during year; Other champs: St. John-Endicott 1B football; Lakeside, 1A boys cross country; St. George’s, 2B/1B boys cross country.

Individual champions – Cameron Quackenbush, Ferris, 4A boys cross country; Brad Serdar, Reardan, 2B/1B boys cross country; Lisa Vandenburg, 2B/1B girls cross country.

Winter

Lewis and Clark becomes the third Greater Spokane League school to win back-to-back girls state basketball titles and Ferris wins the boys championship with a 29-0 season.

LC’s Tigers join Shadle Park and Mead as champions by defeating GSL rival University for the 4A girls title. Ferris outraces 4A boys favorite Franklin in the semifinals and beat Kentridge in two overtimes to cap perfect year. Feel-good story of the year is North Central’s third-place 3A finish. After going 4-16 during regular season, team wins seven of nine playoff games to earn ninth state trophy in nine tournaments. East Valley girls made their first state appearance. Also, University finishes fourth in 4A, Deer Park second in 2A and Lakeside third in 1A wrestling.

Spring

Shadle Park becomes second GSL softball team to win a state championship.

In their second trip to the State 4A finals the Highlanders don’t allow a run in grabbing one of the most difficult titles to attain. They now have first-, second- and fourth-place trophies. At the same time North Central finishes fourth in the 3A by going 4-2, the Indians’ first state wins and trophy in three appearances. Mead’s girls and NC’s boys are second in track.

State team champions – Lewis and Clark 4A girls tennis; Clarkston 2A boys tennis; Lakeside 1A girls track; Chewelah, 1A girls golf; Odessa, 1B boys track; Curlew 1B softball; Sprague-Harrington 1B girls tennis.

Individual champions – Track 4A: Kelly McNamee, Ferris, high jump; Nikki Codd, Mead 800; Ashley Hutchinson, Mead, shot put; Mead girls 1,600 relay. 3A: Jordan Roskelley, Mt. Spokane, pole vault; 2A: Melissa Mauro, WV, high jump; Anna Albrecht, Pullman, shot put-discus; David Musson, Colville, javelin; 1A: Adam Walden, Newport 110 high-300 intermediate hurdles; Lauren Mellor, Colfax, 300 hurdles; Erin Smith, Chewelah, long jump; Loreah Winlow, Lakeside, pole vault; 2B: Brad Serdar, Reardan, 1,600; Jared Friedly, Northwest Christian, 800; Kris Widman, T-O/Rosalia, high jump; Ashley Stabl, T-O-Rosalia. 300 hurdles. 1B: Matt Cronrath, Odessa, 800-1,600; Aaron Wilson, Odessa, pole vault; Odessa 1,600 relay; Kaprina Goodwin, Northport, long jump-triple jump-100 hurdles-300 hurdles; Simhaykin Jack, Inchelium, discus; Inchelium girls 400 relay.
