Shoreline Chr. 56, Toutle Lake 42

In Saturday’s game for fifth and eighth places at the Arena, Shoreline Christian built a 12-point first-quarter lead and hung on to defeat the Ducks.

Fresh off of a big win over Liberty Bell on Friday, the Crusaders jumped up early on the Ducks in the first quarter with a 19-7 lead. The gap remained the same through the half.

A combination of tough perimeter defense by Shoreline and a tough day shooting for Toutle Lake guards resulted in 2-of-26 shooting from 3-point range. Janae Wall and Kayla Vickaryous made one apiece.

In the first half, Shoreline limited Toutle Lake to 6-of-31 shooting from the field and the second half was similar.

The Ducks shot 21 percent for the game, making 15 of 71 attempts.

For Shoreline, success came from the free-throw line, particularly in the first half when it shot 9 for 10. Shoreline finished 15 for 27. Ann Barrick converted on 6 of 7 attempts and Colleen Woods made four of her 19 points from the line. Woods also made five 3-pointers.

The Crusaders (24-3) shot 18 of 36 from the floor. Julia DeKoekkoek continued an already stellar tournament performance for Shoreline, leading all players with 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting and dishing out three assists. Tess Hodges grabbed 10 rebounds as well.

For the eighth-place Ducks (18-10), Vickaryous tallied 14 points and seven rebounds, going 5 for 6 from the line.

The Tigers didn’t use any offensive outbursts to pull away. They led 10-8 after the first quarter and gradually gained ground by keeping possession and turning the ball over just eight times.

After an authoritative 72-48 win over St. George’s Friday, the Panthers could not catch Napavine. They shot 12 of 40 from the field and 2 of 14 from 3-point range.

The Tigers made 11 field goals in both halves in a consistent shooting day. Kristen Lantau led the Tigers with 12 points, and Courtney May and Alicia Richardson added 10 apiece. May added seven rebounds.

Evergreen L. 40, Waterville 34

Evergreen Lutheran (25-3) was denied a shot at the title after a disappointing loss to La Salle on Friday, so the Eagles’ seniors assured their team of the next-best thing.

Forward Erika Laete had a team-high 10 points and 15 rebounds and fellow senior Rachel Hanson added nine points on 4-of-9 shooting as Evergreen Lutheran took third place with a win over the Shockers (22-5), who placed sixth.

The Eagles set the tempo early, scoring the first five points of the game and racing out to a 15-6 lead with 6:29 left in the second quarter.

But the Shockers fought back and cut the deficit to two before the half.

In the second half, Waterville continued its comeback. The Shockers led 29-26 heading into the fourth.

Then the Eagles’ senior stepped up. Led by Laete and Hanson, Evergreen Lutheran topped Waterville 14-5 in the final quarter to close it out.

Laete scored five points in the final 50 seconds. Her two free throws with 5 seconds left gave the Eagles a six-point lead.

Waterville, coming off a tough loss to Mossyrock on Friday, couldn’t buy a basket in the fourth quarter.

Senior Lauren Daling tallied a game-high 13 points and senior Jacque Brown added 11 points to lead the Shockers.
