NFL: Hasselbeck recovery ahead of schedule
Matt Hasselbeck is ahead of his original recovery schedule.
The Seahawks expect the Pro Bowl quarterback from two seasons ago to be throwing again by June, if not during the first week of May, following surgery in January to repair torn labrum cartilage in Hasselbeck’s left, non-throwing shoulder.
“I have been told he’s ahead of schedule,” Seattle president of football operations Tim Ruskell said this week, during an appearance at the construction site of the Seahawks’ suburban headquarters in Renton, Wash., that will open in 2008.
Ruskell said Hasselbeck, who will be entering his ninth season, may be on the field for Seattle’s first minicamp following the NFL draft April 28-29.
Cowboys sign Hamlin
The Dallas Cowboys signed former Seattle safety Ken Hamlin. Terms weren’t released.
Hamlin had three sacks and two interceptions for the Seahawks last year, a season in which he played all 16 games following life-threatening head injuries from a street fight in 2005.
He was Seattle’s second-round pick in 2003 and started 52 of 54 regular-season games he played.
Texans waive Carr
The Houston Texans waived quarterback David Carr, the first draft pick in franchise history five years ago, and running back Domanick Williams.
Carr completed 60 percent of his passes, but also threw 65 interceptions and was sacked 249 times in five seasons.
Williams, formerly Domanick Davis, is Houston’s career rushing leader with 3,195 yards. He spent all of last season on injured reserve with a knee injury.
The Texans also re-signed 1999 Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne, who joined the Texans just before last season and blossomed late in the year, rushing for 429 yards and five touchdowns in December.
Reid returns to Eagles
Head coach Andy Reid returned from a temporary leave of absence, five weeks after leaving the Philadelphia Eagles because his two oldest sons face criminal charges.
Britt Reid, 21, faces a felony charge of carrying a firearm without a license and misdemeanor drug charges stemming from a road rage incident in which he allegedly pointed a gun at another motorist.
Garrett Reid, 23, faces charges he injured a woman in a traffic accident while under the influence of heroin.
Falcons sign QB
The Atlanta Falcons, who traded backup quarterback Matt Schaub to the Houston Texans earlier in the week, signed veteran quarterback Chris Redman.
Redman played for new Falcons coach Bobby Petrino at the University of Louisville and has played in 10 games with the Baltimore Ravens.
Cardinals sign two
The Arizona Cardinals signed fullback Terrelle Smith and defensive lineman Chris Cooper to two-year contracts.
