Area Roundup: GU earns 2nd Fawley Cup victory
The Gonzaga University women’s rowing team made history Saturday by winning its second Fawley Cup against Washington State at Silver Lake near Medical Lake.
The Bulldogs varsity 8 team defeated the Cougars with a time of 6 minutes, 31.94 seconds, its fastest finish in school history. The Cougars finished in 6:32.90.
Gonzaga won five out of the seven races on the day.
The Cougars’ lone victories were the junior varsity 8 and the 2nd/3rd novice 8.
The Bulldogs other Fawley Cup victory was in 1997.
Baseball
Edmonds scored seven runs in the second inning and coasted to a 7-5 non-conference win over visiting CC Spokane.
Chris Bozo went 2 for 3, including a two-run home run in the sixth, for the Sasquatch. The game was called after the sixth inning because of rain.
With the loss, CCS fell to 10-8 on the season. The Tritons improved to 8-4.
“Gonzaga’s game against Utah Valley State was rescheduled because of weather conditions. The game will be played as part of a doubleheader today at 11 a.m. at Gonzaga.
Softball
Jessie LaPlante tossed a complete-game six-hit shutout as visiting Whitworth blanked Redlands (Calif.) 2-0 in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader.
LaPlante, a junior, improved to 7-0 on the season.
Sara Rylaarsdam singled to left field in the seventh inning to drive in both runs for Whitworth.
The win marked the first time the Pirates have beaten the Bulldogs, the two-time defending SCIAC champions.
The Pirates saw their 12-game winning streak to open the season end in the second game.
Redlands jumped out to a 5-0 lead and withstood a three-run seventh-inning rally by the Pirates to post a 5-3 victory.
The Pirates are 12-1 on the season, while Redlands fell to 13-6.

Track and field
Several Washington State University athletes reached NCAA regional qualifying marks at the USC Trojan Invitational in Los Angeles.
Diana Pickler won the women’s high jump with a personal-best and qualifying height of 5 feet, 10 3/4 inches.
McKenzie Garberg also hit a regional qualifying mark in the women’s discus with a first-place throw of 163-1.
Phil MacArthur qualified in the men’s hammer with a throw of 185-5 – good enough for a fifth-place finish.
Robert Williams placed fourth in the men’s 110-meter hurdles with a qualifying time of 14.25 seconds.
Cougars reaching personal records included Lorraine King in the women’s 400 (61.81), Reny Follett in the men’s 400 (48.44) and Vic Asher in the men’s shot put (49-11 3/4). Kyle Eaton equaled his personal record in the men’s high jump, clearing 6-8 3/4.
