Area Roundup: Castellitto saves day for Bulldogs

Gonzaga freshman Mark Castellitto hit a pinch-hit, two-run walk-off home run in the ninth inning as the Bulldogs beat visiting Loyola Marymount 7-6 in a West Coast Conference game at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field.

Mike Terry went 3 for 4 with two RBIs for GU (28-21, 11-5).

The Lions (20-28-1, 8-9) scored five runs in the first three innings to take an early 5-0 lead.

Reliever Jeremy Stumetz (3-1) earned the win for GU.

“Jake Rife and Michael Burgher drove in two runs apiece as Washington (22-20, 7-6) topped No. 8 Oregon State (34-10, 6-7) 6-2 in front of a Pac-10-record crowd of 10,421 at Safeco Field in Seattle.

Softball

Melissa Piephoff’s fourth-inning grand slam sparked CC Spokane’s 8-0 victory in the second game of a NWAACC doubleheader at SFCC as the Sasquatch split with Columbia Basin.

Donna Franco hit a three-run home run in the third inning of the opener as Columbia Basin (19-20, 15-9) won 9-5. Piephoff had three hits for the Sasquatch in that game.

Amber Keeler earned the win for CCS (19-19, 13-11) in the five-inning second game, scattering five hits in the complete game.

“Danielle Lawrie allowed three hits and struck out 11 in the complete game and Ashley Charters hit a grand slam in the fourth as No. 11 Washington (33-13, 10-6) blanked No. 15 Stanford (31-15-1, 6-9-1) 7-0 in a Pac-10 game at Husky Softball Stadium in Seattle.

“Six Whitworth players have been selected to the All-Northwest Conference team. Heather Case, Lindsay Davis, Halley Cey and Lacey Parry were all named to the All-NWC first team. Jessie LaPlante and Lacey Kerr were named to the second team.

“Shay Craig hit two solo home runs as fourth-seeded North Idaho topped third-seeded Southern Nevada (31-16) 5-2 in the semifinals of the Region 18 softball tournament in Salt Lake City.

The Cardinals (38-24) will play the winner between Southern Nevada and Southern Idaho in the championship game today for a chance to play in the NJCAA national tournament May 18-20.

Track and field

Curtis Suver ran the fourth-fastest 1,500 meters in Eastern Washington University history at the Ken Shannon Invitational in Seattle. Suver’s time of 3 minutes, 48.89 seconds placed him fifth in a tightly packed field led by Washington’s Carl Moe in 3:47.79.

“Idaho redshirt Matt Wauters and Washington State’s McKenzie Garberg won the men’s and women’s hammer throws at the Vandal Jamboree in Moscow, Idaho.

Wauters’ throw of 211 feet, 11 inches won the men’s event by more than 24 feet, while Garberg reached 180-6.
