State Roundup: Grumbach leads Curlew to first state softball title
The Curlew softball team earned its first state title after defeating Colton in the State 1B championship game Saturday at the Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima – and they did so in dominating fashion.
Curlew’s Amanda Grumbach fired a complete-game three-hitter, leading the Cougars (23-4) to a 7-0 win.
Curlew scored six of its seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Grumbach and April Barkley each ripped RBI doubles.
The Cougars beat Garfield-Palouse and Touchet on Friday to reach the finals.
In the consolation finals, Entiat edged Garfield-Palouse 8-7 to take third place. The Vikings, who settled for fourth, beat Inchelium earlier.
“Lauryn Bassen’s RBI single in the top of the eighth gave Lakeside a 5-4 win over Chimacum in the State 1A consolation finals in Moses Lake.
Moriah Beeler went 3 for 4 and scored three times, including the winning run. Lacey Jordan picked up the win for the Eagles (21-8) after allowing four hits in the complete game.
Lakeside had to win three times just to reach the consolation game. The Eagles eliminated Kettle Falls after beating the Bulldogs 4-1. Lakeside then routed Lynden Christian 12-2 and edged Chelan 4-2 in the consolation semifinals.
“Jess Jo Sandrini pitched a complete-game one-hitter while striking out 14 as Adna topped Davenport 1-0 in the consolation quarterfinals of the State 2B tournament at Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima.
Adna scored the lone run of the game in the first inning.
Earlier, Davenport beat Liberty (21-4) 6-1. Kayleigh Fisk pitched the complete game, giving up four hits.
The Gorillas (20-5) finished the tournament tied for seventh.
Baseball
Bryce Todd’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh scored Ryan King and gave Odessa a 3-2 win over Northport in the State 1B third/fourth-place game at Parker Field in Yakima.
Trevor Smith earned the win for the Tigers (18-4) after allowing five hits in a complete-game effort.
“Nooksack Valley routed Lakeside 15-1 in the State 1A consolation championship. The Eagles (23-3) placed fourth.
