Inside our Schools: Skyway kids vote for favorite lunch
Forget the mudslinging and false accusations that seem to characterize so many political races nowadays – the voting going on at Skyway Elementary School last week was unadulterated democracy in action.
Kids at the Coeur d’Alene school district’s 10 elementary schools voted Oct. 19 for their favorite lunch choice out of five options: Pippa Potato, Jesse Wrap, Biff Burger, Yumi Rice Bowl or Patty Mac ‘n’ Cheese.
Patty Mac ‘n’ Cheese won and will be served as lunch Nov. 6, which is Election Day for those 18 and older.
The vote coincided with National School Lunch Week. Similar elections took place in elementary school cafeterias across the nation.
“Hopefully by doing this some of the kids will go home and bring the sticker and tell Mom and Dad (they voted),” said Ed Ducar, food service director for the Coeur d’Alene School District.
Ducar spent the noon hour on voting day at Skyway, dressed in an Uncle Sam costume and handing “voting is cool” stickers to students after they dropped their completed ballot in the box.
Second-grader Suzy Traverse voted for the mac ‘n’ cheese.
During a brief interview before heading out to recess, Suzy said the reasoning behind her vote was twofold.
“I thought it really tastes better,” she said.
Plus, “We haven’t had it for a long time,” she said. “For the three years I’ve been here, it really hasn’t been there.”
Friend and fellow second-grader Azaria Tillson voted for Jesse Wrap but admitted it was a tough decision.
“I like the chicken,” she said.
But chicken wasn’t an option this time.
High school plays
Lake City High’s play “The Invisible Invalid” wraps up tonight, and Coeur d’Alene High’s play opens Thursday. About 60 CHS students will star in “Disney’s High School Musical” on Nov. 1-3 and 8-10. Curtain time is 7 p.m., with matinees at 1 p.m. on Nov. 3 and 10. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students, $25 for family of five and $5 for senior citizens. Advance tickets are available from Hands On Art or Eternabella Salon (cash or check only) or by contacting director Pat Caloca at (208) 769-2999.
“It’s probably the No. 1 hot musical show right now,” said Caloca. “Everyone from 5-year-olds to adults loves the show.”
Based on the popular movie, the play involves two high school students from different cliques who try out for the lead parts in their high school’s musical.
“The idea that you don’t have to be just a jock or just a thespian; you can do whatever you want to do,” Caloca said.
Seniors Hannah Yeats and Dock Rosenthal play the lead roles of Gabriella and Troy. Lizzy French plays Sharpay, and Aaron Baldwin plays Ryan.
