Kirsch’s goal, assist power Pirates past Linfield
Keith Kirsch scored one goal and assisted on the other to lead Whitworth University to a 2-0 Northwest Conference men’s soccer victory over Linfield College Sunday afternoon at Whitworth Soccer Field.
Ryan Powers got Whitworth (4-1-1, 2-0) on the board – with help from Kirsch – at the 27 minute mark. Kirsch scored his goal three minutes later.
The Pirates outshot the Wildcats (4-2, 0-2) 21-7.
•Gonzaga University (3-2) scored two goals during a five-minute stretch of the second half to beat Panther Invitational Tournament host Wisconsin-Milwaukee 2-1.
George Josten and Nick Barclay scored for Gonzaga.
Women’s soccer
Sophomore Kiersten Dallstream’s second goal of the game 35 seconds into the second overtime gave Washington State (4-0-1) a 2-1 victory over Princeton at the Notre Dame Inn at Saint Mary’s Classic at Notre Dame, Ind.
WSU’s Brynn Bemis was named goalkeeper MVP and defensive MVP. Dallstream, Natalie Elkinda nd Mallory Fox also made the all-tournament team.
Moriah Neville scored off the finger tips of Vandal goalkeeper Anna Sandman in overtime to give Cal State Bakersfield a 2-1 non-conference victory over Idaho at Guy Wicks Field.
•Freshman Anna Edmonds scored Idaho’s lone goal at the 30:36 mark when she converted a pass from junior Britta Rustad to tie the score at 1-1.
•Lauren Descenzo and Ashley Riley each scored goals as Gonzaga (4-2) captured the Vanderbilt Tournament championship with a 2-1 victory over Alabama-Birmingham (4-1-1) at Nashville, Tenn.
•Defender Kaylyn Plumb scored two goals to lead Whitworth University (5-0, 2-0) to a 5-1 Northwest Conference victory over Linfield College (1-3-1, 0-2) at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
•North Idaho College dropped a 5-0 non-conference match to NJCAA fifth-ranked Laramie County at Cheyenne, Wyo.
Golf
Kyle Thompson made a 60-foot eagle putt on the final hole of regulation, then birdied the par-5 18th twice in a three-man playoff to win the Nationwide Tour Oregon Classic at Junction City, Ore.
Former Ferris High School and University of Washington star Alex Prugh shot his second-straight 75 on Sunday to finish tied for 65th overall at one-under 287. He pocketed $1,294 for his efforts.
Junior hockey
Jeremy Anderson, Tanner Slarks, Jake Peterson and Cam Sargent each scored goals and Sargent also had an assist but the Spokane Braves (0-2-1-0, 1 point) dropped an 8-4 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League decision to the Grand Forks Border Bruins (2-0-1-0, 5 points) at Grand Forks, British Columbia.
After a game in Nelson, British Columbia, on Friday, the Braves will face the Kamloops Storm on Saturday in its home opener at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
