Martinez out 4 to 6 weeks

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Pedro Martinez will be sidelined four to six weeks with what the New York Mets said was a mild strain of his left hamstring.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday night.

The Mets filled Martinez’s roster spot by purchasing the contract of pitcher Nelson Figueroa from Triple-A New Orleans.

On second thought

Brian McNamee was planning to dump all his mementos of his relationship with Roger Clemens.

Then a friend persuaded him to think better of it.

Now the former personal trainer who claims he injected the seven time Cy Young Award winner with steroids is selling dozens of personal items in an online auction, and donating the profits to his juvenile diabetes charity.

Bowa ticked off

Los Angeles Dodgers third-base coach Larry Bowa was incensed after being suspended for three games and fined by the commissioner’s office following a wild argument Tuesday.

Bowa was tossed by umpire Ed Montague, who had told him to keep within the boundaries of the coaching box. Bob Watson, baseball’s vice president in charge of discipline, cited Bowa for “inappropriate and aggressive conduct,” which included making contact with Montague several times.

“It’s ludicrous, is what it is. Probably the suspension’s more ludicrous than the rule,” Bowa said.

Clearing the bases

Admitted steroid user Jose Canseco met with two members of the newly-formed Major League Baseball Department of Investigations just prior to a book signing at a midtown Manhattan Barnes & Noble for his new book “Vindicated: Big Names, Big Liars, and the Battle to Save Baseball.” Afterward, Canseco stated, “I’m definitely willing to help them out as much as possible and we’ll find out how it turns out.” … Detroit center fielder Curtis Granderson expects to have X-rays taken on his broken right hand this weekend. … Chris Duncan was not in St. Louis’ lineup, a day after he tweaked his hamstring running the bases. … Right-handed reliever Rudy Seanez and Philadelphia finalized a $400,000, one-year contract.
