University hands Ferris first defeat in soccer

Chris Woodard scored a goal in the second overtime period for University in a 3-2 win over visiting Ferris in a Greater Spokane League showdown.

Ferris (8-1, 7-1) took a 2-0 lead into the second half, but two late goals from Evan Frobe and Mike Ramos sent the game to overtime. Woodard received a pass from Oscar Marmolejo and won it for the Titans (9-4, 7-1) in the 86th minute. … In other GSL action, Andrew Mastronardi scored three goals in a 4-2 win for East Valley over North Central at Albi Stadium. Mastronardi scored two goals in the first half, leading the Knights (4-6, 4-4) to a 3-0 halftime lead. The Indians (2-10, 0-9) scored twice to open the second half, but Mastronardi’s final goal in the 80th minute added some insurance for EV. … Nick Reilly scored three goals for Mt. Spokane in a 5-0 win over host Gonzaga Prep. Andy Jones added a goal and an assist for the Wildcats (3-5). Renton Day also had a goal for Mt. Spokane. The Bullpups (5-7, 3-6) recorded six shots on goal. … Central Valley scored six goals in the second half in a 9-0 win over host Rogers. Robert Wulf scored in the 31st minute for the Bears (9-4, 7-2) and Joseph Guerrinha added two goals in the second half. Rogers (0-11, 0-9) managed eight shots on goal.

Baseball

Sophomore David McNeill had a three-run double in the second inning for Lewis and Clark in a 5-3 win over Central Valley in a Greater Spokane League game at Hart Field.

Benny Baird struck out six and walked two in a complete game win on the mound for the Tigers (4-12). Donnie Santos added a two-run single in the fifth inning for LC. K.C. Mack and Trevor Shull had two hits each for CV (7-7).

In other GSL action, Andrew Kittredge threw a complete game and struck out seven for Ferris in an 8-3 win over visiting Rogers. Kittredge also hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning. Later in the inning, junior Aaron Roberts smacked a grand slam to give the Saxons (11-3) an 8-0 lead. Jacob Campbell had two hits for the Pirates (6-10). … Ian Carlson had two hits, two RBIs and pitched four solid innings for Shadle Park in a 5-2 win over visiting North Central. Carlson’s two-run triple in the fourth inning gave the Highlanders (4-10) enough for the win as Andrew Roginski earned the save. Evan Witt went 3 for 4 with a double for the Indians (5-9). … Tyler Thoreson had a triple and a two-run home run and Mead scored nine runs in the first two innings in a 12-7 win over visiting East Valley. Sean McNaghten was 2 for 4 with three RBIs for the Panthers (13-1). Kyle Lane led the Knights (3-11) with a double and three RBIs. … Danny Jordan struck out 10 and retired 15 straight batters from the end of the first to the start of the sixth inning for University in a 10-1 win over host Mt. Spokane. Jordan was 3 for 5 with three RBIs for the Titans (12-2). Nic Fowler had an RBI double for the Wildcats (7-9).

•West Valley used timely hitting and solid defense in 10-0 and 4-3 wins over visiting Medical Lake in Great Northern League action. Tommy Peterson went 3 for 3 with four RBIs and two home runs for WV (11-2, 8-0) in the first game. Anthony Salazar pitched a five-inning shutout and had a hit for the Eagles. In the second contest, Andy Vennum went 2 for 3 with a double for WV. Mike Constantine went 4 for 6 with a double on the day for Medical Lake (6-5, 5-4).

Chris Combo struck out five and Michael Korczyk was 1 for 2 with two RBIs for Lake City in a 6-2 win over visiting Post Falls in Inland Empire League action. Combo gave up five hits and two runs on the mound for the Timberwolves (10-2, 5-2). Zack Aker was 2 for 3 with a solo home run for Post Falls (3-7, 2-3).

Softball

Samantha Skillingstad struck out a combined 28 batters and gave up two hits in 14-0 and 10-0 wins for Shadle Park over host East Valley in Greater Spokane League action. Megan Skillingstad, Sam’s freshman sister, had three hits, including a home run and three RBIs for the Highlanders (10-0) in the first game. In the second game, Tressa Predisik hit home runs in three consecutive at-bats and drove in five RBIs for Shadle. Kelsey Kurtz singled in the fifth inning for the Knights (3-8) to break up the no-hitter. … In other GSL action, Alyssa Erickson gave up two runs and struck out five for Central Valley in a 4-2 win over visiting North Central. CV (8-4) benefited from stellar defense in the win. Jamie Belknap threw out NC’s Kim Hare at home plate to save a run in the sixth inning. Kelsie Vallies struck out 11 for NC (10-3) in a losing effort. … Mead singled five times and scored three runs in the sixth in a 4-2 win over host Lewis and Clark at Hart Field. LC (2-9) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but three runs in the sixth and an RBI from Tiffany Lookabill in the seventh gave the Panthers (11-3) the win. Kendall Pavey singled and had an RBI for the Tigers. Pavey also struck out four on the mound. … Delaney Zalud scored on an error in the second inning for Mt. Spokane in a 1-0 win over visiting Rogers. Chelsea Gray threw a complete-game shutout and struck out seven for the Wildcats (7-5) and she also went 2 for 3. Mindy Tremblay gave up six hits and an unearned run for Rogers (3-11). … Mollie Buelow threw a three-hit complete game for University in a 15-1 win over visiting Ferris. Dakota Schiermeister was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for the Titans (9-3). Cassie Wendt and Haley Hydrick had two of the Saxons’ (0-13) three hits.

•West Valley scored a combined 32 runs in 23-4 and 9-0 wins over visiting Medical Lake in Great Northern League games. Rachel Meagley struck out 17 in two games for the Eagles (7-6, 6-2) and Stephanie Hjortedal was 3 for 5 with four RBIs on the day. Medical Lake (1-9, 1-6) combined for eight hits on the day. … In other GNL action, Colville racked up 31 runs in 19-1 and 12-1 wins over host Cheney. Shayd Urhausen was 5 for 7 with a home run for Colville (13-1, 10-0). Cheney (6-8, 3-5) was led by Sarah Schoengold’s two hits.

Track

Derrick Puckett helped Timberlake to victories in the 1,600- and 400-meter relays and the Tigers won the boys title with 122 points at the Lakeland Relays in Rathdrum. Helping with wins in the long jump and triple jump, Shaylyn Jorgens aided Lakeland to the girls title with 104 points.
