Wednesday’s results
White Sox 4, Royals 0: At Chicago, Ken Griffey Jr. hit an RBI single in the first inning then made a diving catch in the second, and Mark Buehrle pitched five-hit ball for seven innings to lead the White Sox to a victory over Kansas City. Jermaine Dye added an RBI double to help keep the White Sox a half-game ahead of the Minnesota Twins in the Central Division.
Rays 3, Athletics 2: At Oakland, Calif., Eric Hinske had three hits, including a home run, and Ben Zobrist doubled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as Tampa Bay beat the Athletics. Carlos Pena also homered for the Rays.
Twins 4, Yankees 2: At Minneapolis, Delmon Young hit a three-run homer for the second straight day and Minnesota doubled up New York. Joe Nathan sealed the victory in the ninth with his 32nd save, sending the Yankees to their seventh loss in 10 games.
Blue Jays 4, Tigers 3: At Detroit, Vernon Wells hit a grand slam and David Purcey pitched six shutout innings to lead Toronto past the Tigers. The Blue Jays have won three straight, all in Detroit, while the Tigers have lost 10 of 13.
Red Sox 8, Rangers 4: At Boston, Kevin Youkilis led another hitting outburst for the Red Sox with three doubles and Boston held off a late Texas rally for the victory. Texas trailed 8-0 in the eighth inning, but Milton Bradley’s three-run homer made it 8-4. The Rangers then put their first two batters on base in the ninth before Ian Kinsler – leading the majors in hits – grounded into a double play.
Orioles 6, Indians 1: At Cleveland, Jeremy Guthrie won his fourth straight start, and Baltimore snapped the Indians’ five-game winning streak.
