Whitworth stops Simpson

BURLINGAME, Calif. – Whitworth recovered from a slow start to defeat Simpson (Iowa) 77-56 in the opening game of the Ameriprise Whitworth Classic on Sunday afternoon at Burlingame High School.

Nate Montgomery led four Pirates (7-1) in double figures with 17 points. Calvin Jurich and David Riley each had 14 for 19th-ranked Whitworth, while Tim Sellereit came off of the bench for 12 points. Ross Nakamura had nine assists for the Bucs.

Austin Boyce scored 21 points and Jason Foster added 20 to lead 21st-ranked Puget Sound to a 102-79 win over Gustavus Adolphus in Sunday’s other game.

The event concludes today with Puget Sound playing Simpson at noon and Whitworth taking on Gustavus Adolphus at 2 p.m.
