Budweiser Shootout
Site: Daytona Beach, Fla. Schedule: Saturday, race (FOX, 5 p.m.). Track: Daytona International Speedway (tri-oval, 2.5 miles, 31 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 175 miles, 70 laps. Last year: Tony Stewart nudged Kyle Busch out of the lead with eight laps to go, then calmly drove to his third victory in the Budweiser Shootout when runner-up David Gilliland never challenged. Fast facts: The Shootout is only open to drivers who won a pole last season and past winners of the event who finished among the top 50 in last year’s final standings. It begins with a 20-lap segment followed by a 50-lap “shootout” for the win. … Busch led six times for a race-high 42 laps last year. … Stewart won consecutive Shootouts in 2001-02. … Denny Hamlin, Buddy Baker, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon and Dale Jarrett are the only drivers to win the Shootout in their first attempt. … This event began in 1979 and has had 17 different winners through 29 events. … The field order is done through a drawing, which will take place Thursday. Next race: Daytona 500, Feb. 17, Daytona Beach, Fla.

Gary Scelzi won Funny Car when Robert Hight, who eliminated Force, was disqualified after crossing the center line and hitting a timing cone. J.R. Todd won the Top Fuel division and Greg Anderson topped Pro Stock. Fast facts: Tony Schumacher became the first Top Fuel driver to win four straight championships last season. He won the last two on his final pass. … David Powers was the only multicar owner to have two Top Fuel cars make the Countdown to Four last season. Rod Fuller and Whit Bazemore both contended for the title, with Fuller finishing just 19 points behind Schumacher. … Fourteen-time Funny Car champ John Force is back after his horrific crash at Texas Motorplex on Sept. 23. He broke an ankle, foot, hand and several fingers, and badly damaged a knee and wrist after his car was hit by Kenny Bernstein’s as the two crossed the finish line during their second-round run. … The qualifying format has been changed for this season. The best 12 elapsed times in each category will be provisionally recorded before the last qualifying day. The teams that failed to earn a provisional spot will have another chance to make the elimination field during the final qualifying day… The Pro Stock division will debut the new Pontiac GXP this weekend. … This event has been held every February since 1961.
