Golfweek editor fired over noose cover

Ten days after a Golf Channel anchor was suspended for her use of “lynch” in commentary on Tiger Woods, an editor was fired Friday for illustrating the controversy with a noose on the cover of Golfweek magazine.

Dave Seanor, vice president and editor who took responsibility for the noose cover of the Jan. 19 issue, was replaced by Jeff Babineau.

“We apologize for creating this graphic cover that received extreme negative reaction from consumers, subscribers and advertisers across the country,” Turnstile Publishing Co. president William J. Kupper Jr. said.

•Robert Gamez, in the tournament on an exemption, missed some short putts but still shot a 5-under-par 67 to take the lead after three rounds of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in Palm Desert, Calif. Gamez went to 18-under 198, good for a one-shot lead over Justin Leonard and D.J. Trahan.

•Tom Purtzer shot a bogey-free, 10-under 62 to take the first-round lead in the Champions Tour’s season-opening MasterCard Championship at Kaupulehu-Kona, Hawaii. Jim Thorpe and Allen Doyle were a stroke back.

Walker claims disorder

Georgia football great Herschel Walker has multiple personalities – a revelation in an upcoming book that surprises the man who coached the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner.

“That’s all news to me,” former Georgia coach Vince Dooley said. “All I know is whatever personality he had when he had the football was the one I liked.”

“Breaking Free” will chronicle Walker’s life with multiple personality disorder, according to Shida Carr, a publicist at Simon & Schuster.

•Clemson running back James Davis has returned to college more than a week after announcing his intentions to turn pro.

The school said that Davis faxed letters to the NFL and Clemson hours before the deadline to reconsider.

•Penn State’s president and athletic director plan to meet with Joe Paterno in the next few months, in part to talk about the 81-year-old coach’s future.

Paterno typically meets with school administrators each off-season but this year’s meeting is attracting extra attention because Paterno’s contract expires after the 2008 season.

•Kentucky offensive coordinator Joker Phillips will eventually become the Wildcats’ head coach following Rich Brooks’ retirement, the university announced. The 66-year-old Brooks has not set a timetable for retirement.

Elder wins super-G

Marco Buechel of Liechtenstein won a men’s super-G race at Kitzbuehel, Austria, to become the oldest winner of a World Cup event. Buechel, who is 36 years, two months and 14 days old, finished in 1 minute, 15.44 seconds.

•South Carolina men’s basketball coach Dave Odom announced that he will retire at the end of the season.

•Erik Vendt set an American swimming record in the 1,000-yard freestyle in the Southern California Grand Prix at Long Beach, Calif., finishing in 8 minutes, 36.49 seconds.

•A York (Neb.) College wrestler was killed and some of his teammates were injured in a van crash en route to a meet in Iowa.
