WSU meet records fall

University of Idaho’s Russ Winger stood out on a record-breaking day at the WSU Open Indoor track and field meet in Pullman on Saturday.

Winger won the men’s shot put with a NCAA automatic qualiftying toss of 64 feet, 2 1/4 inches – nearly a foot longer than his meet-record toss last year.

Six other records fell on the second day of the meet: former Washington State All-America heptathlete Diana Pickler (women’s long jump, 19-3 1/2); WSU’s Meghan Leonard (women’s mile, 5:03.48); WSU’s Sarah Burns (women’s triple jump, 40-6); former Idaho Vandal Angela Whyte (60 meters, 7.49 seconds); Idaho’s Kevin Pabst (men’s long jump, 23-9); and Idaho’s Mykael Bothum (women’s shot put, 49-9).

Whitworth sophomore Cody Stelzer broke an 11-year-old school record and qualified for the NCAA Division III track and field championships when he won the high jump, clearing 6-10 3/4.

Wrestling

North Idaho College had a pair of wrestlers win individual titles at the Clackamas (Ore.) Open.

Nektoe Dennison defeated teammate Derek Crouter to win the 125-pound division and Dino May finished first in the 174-pound division.
