Rays 3, Cubs 2: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Cliff Floyd and Evan Longoria hit solo home runs to spark Tampa Bay to a victory over Chicago and spoil former Jays manager Lou Piniella’s return to Tropicana Field. Grant Balfour pitched 11/3 innings in relief of Scott Kazmir to get the win.

Royals 2, Cardinals 1: At St. Louis, Mike Aviles homered to snap an eighth-inning tie and Kyle Davies worked seven sharp innings to lead Kansas City past the Cardinals. The Royals are 5-2 in interleague play, but 29-42 overall.

Brewers 7, Blue Jays 0: At Milwaukee, Manny Parra scattered four hits in seven scoreless innings and Ryan Braun hit two of Milwaukee’s five homers, lifting the Brewers over Toronto. Prince Fielder, Russell Branyan and Craig Counsell also homered for Milwaukee.

Orioles 6, Astros 5: At Baltimore, Melvin Mora hit a two-run double in the eighth inning and the Orioles rallied to hand Houston its sixth straight loss.

Red Sox 3, Phillies 0: At Philadelphia, Jon Lester struck out five over seven shutout innings and Coco Crisp homered to lead Boston over the Phillies. Jonathan Papelbon worked the ninth for his 20th save.

Yankees 8, Padres 0: At New York, Jason Giambi homered twice, Alex Rodriguez also connected and Andy Pettitte tossed seven shutout innings and the Yankees blanked San Diego for their fifth straight victory.

Rangers 7, Braves 5: At Arlington, Texas, Josh Hamilton belted his A.L.-leading 19th home run and Milton Bradley added a two-run single to lead Texas past Atlanta.

Rockies 10, Indians 2: At Denver, Greg Reynolds pitched six strong innings and led Colorado’s season-high 17-hit attack by going 2 for 3 with a run scored as the Rockies routed Cleveland. Jeff Baker hit an inside-the-park home run for Colorado.

White Sox 16, Pirates 5: At Chicago, Jermaine Dye, Joe Crede, Orlando Cabrera and Jim Thome homered and Chicago registered season highs in runs and hits to rout Pittsburgh.

Twins 2, Nationals 1: At Minneapolis, Livan Hernandez allowed one run in seven innings to get his first win in over a month as Minnesota edged Washington. Hernandez is on pace to become the first pitcher since Atlanta’s Phil Niekro in 1979 to allow more than 300 hits in a season.

Athletics 15, Diamondbacks 1: At Phoenix, Mark Ellis hit two home runs to lead a six-homer barrage as Oakland routed Brandon Webb and Arizona.

Angels 6, Mets 1: At Anaheim, Calif., John Lackey scattered six hits over seven-plus innings to lead Los Angeles over New York in Jerry Manuel’s debut as Mets manager.

Tigers 4, Giants 1: At San Francisco, Kenny Rogers pitched seven strong innings and Marcus Thames homered in his fifth straight game as Detroit beat the Giants.
