Peters will coach Canadian juniors

Spokane Chiefs coach Bill Peters will lead the coaching staff for Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team, which will compete in the 2008 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka in Czech Republic and Slovakia from Aug. 12-16.

Peters, a native of Three Hills, Alberta, led the Chiefs to the 2008 Memorial Cup title. Canada’s assistant coaches will be Steve Spott, head coach with the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers, and André Tourigny, general manager/head coach of the QMJHL’s Rouyn-Nouranda Huskies.

A camp will be held Aug. 2-6 in Calgary, Alberta, to finalize the roster.

Canada has won the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka, formerly called the Junior World Cup, three of the last four years.

Dole qualifies for Olympic trials

Jenni Dole, a recent graduate of Mead High School, became the second Spokane Area Swimming member to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials, earning a berth in the 100-meter butterfly at the club’s Summer Solstice meet Friday at Witter Pool in Mission Park with a time of 1 minute, 2.14 seconds.

Coming into the meet, Dole was two-tenths of a second shy of the qualifying time of 1:02.39.

She will join team member Mason Shaw of Coeur d’Alene, who qualified in the 200 individual medley last weekend in Federal Way, Wash.

The trials will be held in Omaha, Neb., June 29-July 5.

Former SAS member CJ Nuess, who recently graduated from Arizona State, will be at the trials also in the 200 and 400 individual medley and 1,500 freestyle. He will be swimming for a Florda team.

Dole will also swim in college on scholarship for Oregon State.

The Summer Solstice meet continues Saturday and Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day. The meet includes more than 500 swimmers from the Northwest.
