Lakeland in Idaho 4A baseball regional championship game

Cody VanDuyne’s fourth-inning single drove home Brady Schweikert with what proved the winning run as Lakeland overcame visiting Sandpoint 4-3 in an Idaho Region I 4A baseball playoff game Monday to advance to Wednesday’s title game.

Sandpoint entertains Moscow today at 4 p.m., with that winner meeting Lakeland for the region’s lone state berth.

Cole Tonnemacher had a two-run, first-inning home run for Sandpoint and Kyle Vandever tied it for Lakeland with a two-out, RBI single in the second.

•Northport, behind the four-hit, 12-strikeout pitching of Tucker Guglielmino, won the Panorama League championship, 5-2 over Curlew at Kettle Falls. Freshman Dylon LeCaire’s RBI double in the fourth gave Northport a 3-0 lead and the Mustangs held on. Jordan Wakefield pitched a five-hitter and struck out 11 for Curlew. … Cusick claimed third place in the Panorama with a 12-2, five-inning win over Columbia-Hunters as Danny Pontius pitched a two-hitter. … Columbia got four RBIs from Jay Curd, two on a fifth-inning homer for the winning run, to eliminate St. Michael’s 7-6 in the day’s first game.

District play begins Thursday with Curlew and Columbia playing at 10:30 a.m. in Odessa, with the loser eliminated and the winner meeting Odessa, the Bi-County League’s No. 1 seed, for a berth in the district championship game. … Cusick and Almira/Coulee-Hartline, the Bi-County No. 2, play in Northport on Thursday with that winner playing Northport for the other spot in the district title game. The loser is out.

Softball

Lakeland has a date at top-seeded Moscow today at 4 p.m. after defeating visiting Sandpoint 3-1 in a Region I 4A tournament game. Jamie Klopatek pitched a three-hitter, striking out 12 and walking three for the Hawks. Jordan Thomas, Alisha Watson and Alia Cox scored for Lakeland in a decisive third inning.

Golf

Kellogg qualified both its boys and girls teams for the Idaho State 3A tournament May 12-13 at Clear Lakes County Club in Buhl with wins in the District I tournament at Bonners Ferry.

The Kellogg boys, led by Dustin Jerome’s 9-over-par 81, bested Priest River 358-433 for the district title. Priest River also advances to state with it’s runner-up finish. The Spartans were led by Jordan McKinney’s 83. Dan Masterson from St. Marie’s, who shot an 82, earned the boys’ at-large berth. Dillon Deitz of Bonners Ferry was the medalist with a 5-over 77.

Only one girls team advances from district. Kellogg, which had the only complete team, shot a 421 for the state berth. The Wildcats’ Alyssa Jarvey and Kelsey Harden shared medalist honors with Holly Martin of Priest River at 102. Martin earned the girls’ at-large berth to state.
