CdA setter MVP in IEL

Coeur d’Alene senior setter Natalie Stewart was named the Inland Empire League’s most valuable player, the coaches announced Tuesday.

Stewart led the Vikings to a league co-championship with Sandpoint, the Region I title and third place at state. She was joined on the first team by teammates Shelby Robb and Kama Griffitts, both senior outside hitters.

CdA coach Carly Curtis was named coach of the year.

Sandpoint senior Abby Helander was named defensive player of the year for the second straight year. Post Falls junior outside hitter Danielle Meehan was named newcomer of the year.

Sandpoint, which captured the State 4A title, had two players named to the first team. They are junior outside hitter Piper Wahlin and junior setter/right-side hitter Koko James.

Football

Lewiston, 5A Inland Empire League champion, had seven players named to the first team and dominated individual honors bestowed by the coaches.

Junior quarterback Justin Podrabsky was named offensive player of the year; senior running back Joey Walton was named offensive back of the year; senior Ridge Fuentes was named defensive back of the year; and junior Spencer Beale was named lineman of the year. Lewiston coach Emmett Dougherty was named coach of the year.

Three Lake City players garnered individual awards. Senior quarterback Adam Fenenbock was named newcomer of the year; senior linebacker Jared Heston was named defensive player of the year; and senior Julian Burgess was named special teams player of the year.

•In 4A, three of the four individual awards were shared. Mike Hubbard of Sandpoint and Jake Helbling of Moscow were newcomers of the year; Jayson Washington of Moscow and Jake Semones of Sandpoint were named offensive players of the year; and Ben Fisher of Sandpoint was named defensive player of the year. Sandpoint coach Mike Mitchell and Moscow coach John Sheaff were named co-coaches of the year.
