OUTFIELD

Lineage for longhairs

A group of dog enthusiasts, including bird hunters from Washington, recently formed a new group to boost the bloodlines of a European bird dog with a style all its own.

The German Long-Haired Pointer Club of North America is establishing a registry for this likeable breed characterized by setter-like coats, feathered full tail and strong desire to hunt, track and retrieve both upland game and waterfowl.

The group seeks to bring together the breed’s best traits from wherever it is found across Europe and this continent, said Del Peterson of Yakima, the group’s president.

Peterson, who imported the breed to North America in 1974 and has been hunting game birds over the dogs ever since, said German breeders have been emphasizing larger and more aggressive dogs for hunting forest big game, such as red stag and wild boar.

The North American club vowes to test and select for upland and waterfowling attributes, as well as biddable companions
