Gonzaga women top Gaels
Usually, working overtime is a pleasing thing for the Saint Mary’s Gaels women’s soccer team.
Not this time.
Courtney Peacock netted her second goal of the game in the 97th minute of action to give the Gonzaga Bulldogs a 4-3 West Coast Conference victory Friday at Moraga, Calif.
Saint Mary’s (8-6-2 overall, 1-2-1 WCC) had been unbeaten (5-0-2) in seven overtime games this season.
Ashley Riley and Sarah Rhodes also scored for Gonzaga (6-9-2, 1-3-0).
•Carly Dobratz scored her second goal of the game in the second overtime to give the Washington State Cougars (8-4-4 overall, 2-2-1 Pac-10) a 2-1 victory over the Oregon Ducks (7-6-2, 0-3-1) at Eugene, Ore.
•Cee Cee Odorfer scored in the first half to give the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (9-6-2 overall, 3-1-1 Big Sky) a 1-0 win over the Eastern Washington Eagles (2-11-3, 0-4-1) at Cheney.
•The Nevada Wolf Pack (2-11-3 overall, 2-2-1 WAC) scored twice in the second half to claim a 2-0 win over the Idaho Vandals (1-13-2, 0-3-1) at Reno, Nev.
•Chelsey Thayn recorded a first-half hat trick to lead the Treasure Valley Chukars (11-5-0 overall, 11-5-0 NWAACC) to a 5-1 victory over the CC Spokane Sasquatch (3-12-3, 2-11-3). Itzia Mendoza scored in the 89th minute for CCS.
•Alex Webber and Kate Deines scored to give the Washington Huskies (11-5-0 overall, 2-3-0 Pac-10) a 2-1 victory over the Oregon State Beavers (5-7-2, 0-3-1) at Corvallis, Ore.
Men’s soccer
Michael Nielsen scored one goal and assisted on Patrick Jurney’s winner to lead the Portland Pilots (6-7-2 overall, 3-4-0 WCC) past the host Gonzaga Bulldogs (5-7-2, 2-4-1) 2-1.
Nick Love scored for the Zags.
•David Strangefeld scored the winning goal at 78 minutes to give the Treasure Valley Chukars (5-5-4 overall, 5-5-4 NWAACC) a 2-1 victory over the CC Spokane Sasquatch (8-7-2, 8-5-1). Jake Krueger scored Spokane’s lone goal.
•Maxwell Griffin’s seventh goal of the season started UCLA (6-4-5, 4-1-1 Pac-10) toward a 2-0 win over Washington (8-5-1, 3-2-1) in Seattle.
Volleyball
Jill Collymore had 13 kills and the Washington Huskies hit .414 as a team in a 25-17, 25-13, 25-17 Pacific-10 Conference sweep of the Washington State Cougars at Seattle.
Kindra Carlson chipped in with 11 kills and hit .579 for Washington (16-3, 7-2).
Brittany Tillman paced WSU (7-13, 0-9) with nine kills.
•Nikki Bardwell collected 16 kills and 15 digs to help the Whitworth Pirates (12-11, overall, 5-6 NWC) to a 22-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-21 home win over the George Fox Bruins (11-10, 5-6).
Women’s basketball
There’s nowhere to go but up for the Washington State Cougars, and perhaps they’re on their way.
The Cougars are picked to finish ninth in the Pacific-10 Conference in a poll of head coaches.
Eight-time defending league champion Stanford is favored after garnering six first-place votes and 78 points.
California is second with four first-place votes and 76 points, followed by Arizona State (65), USC (55), UCLA (48), Oregon (40), Washington (27), Oregon State (25), Washington State (20) and Arizona (16).
WSU has finished last in the Pac-10 for three straight seasons.
