Sandpoint boys reach state soccer title game

Bulldogs defeat Jerome 3-1

The Sandpoint Bulldogs are a victory away from the Idaho State 4A boys soccer championship.

Spencer Swering scored two goals and Daniel Anderson scored another to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 semifinal victory over the Jerome Tigers Friday at Brothers Park in Caldwell, Idaho.

The Bulldogs (19-1) will face the Columbia Wildcats (13-8-3) for the state title today at 10 a.m. Sandpoint returned to the state tournament this season after a one-year hiatus. The Bulldogs had qualified for the previous nine tournaments.

Columbia defeated Century 3-0 in the other semifinal.

Idaho State 5A: The Coeur d’Alene Vikings fought off elimination by claiming a 1-0 victory over Skyline at Eagle High School. Austin Green scored for the Vikings.

CdA will face Idaho Falls – a 2-0 winner over Eagle – for the consolation championship today.

In the semis, Mountain View defeated Centennial 2-0 and Boise defeated Timberline 7-2.

Idaho State 3A: At Vallivue High School, Sam Sanchez scored twice in the final 2 minutes and the American Falls Beavers shocked the Bonners Ferry Badgers 2-1.

Bonners Ferry will face Sugar-Salem for third place today. Payette defeated Sugar-Salem 2-1 in the other semifinal.

Girls soccer

Idaho State 5A: Kendall Stratton scored two goals and Annie Vogel assisted on three goals and the Sandpoint Bulldogs staved off elimination with a 4-0 victory over the Twin Falls Bruins at Meridian High School.

Sandpoint will play Mountain View – a 4-0 winner over Highland – in the consolation championship game today.

In the semifinals, Capital beat Boise 5-3 and Timberline bested Centennial 3-0.

Idaho State 4A: Bishop Kelly got two goals in the first 9 minutes and then held on for a 2-1 victory over Moscow in the semifinals at Brothers Park in Caldwell.

Quincy Moore scored at the 63-minute mark for Moscow. Another Moscow attempt in the second half on a breakaway went just wide of the net.

Bishop Kelly will play Skyview for the state title today. Skyview defeated Columbia 5-1 in the other semifinal. Moscow will face Columbia for third place.

Idaho State 3A: The Shelley Russets converted their final three shots of the shootout to earn a berth in the championship game with a 3-2 victory over Bonners Ferry at Vallivue High School.

In the other semifinal, Fruitland escaped with a 1-0 win over Payette.

Greater Spokane League: Mikayla Anderson scored twice and Jill Pecka and Rachel Nardo each had a goal and an assist and the Mead Panthers (9-1, 27 points) earned the top seed into next week’s District 8 4A tournament with a 6-0 win over the Rogers Pirates (0-10, 0). Lindsey Pangborn and Jami Hegg also scored for the Panthers, who earned the top seed by claiming a 5-2 win over Lewis and Clark last week. … At University, Megan Bech scored in the fourth minute of overtime to give Lewis and Clark (9-1, 27) a 3-2 victory over the Titans (5-5, 16). Kit Parker and Hallie Stocker also scored for LC. U-Hi, the No. 4 seed to district, got a goal and an assist from Shayla Wieler. … At Central Valley the Ferris Saxons (5-5, 14) beat the Bears (3-7, 9) 3-1 and will enter districts as the No. 5 seed. Kelsey Lin recorded a hat trick to lead Ferris, which opens district play Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Albi Stadium against fourth-seeded U-Hi. On Nov. 1 at Albi, Gonzaga Prep will face LC at 11 a.m. followed by the Ferris/U-Hi winner facing No. 1 Mead at 1 p.m. … At Shadle Park, the Highlanders (4-6, 12 points) upset 3A top seed Mt. Spokane 2-1 in a shootout. Goaltender Bianca Pope stopped Mt. Spokane’s first two shooters in the shootout and had seven saves overall. Shadle goes to regionals as the No. 3 seed. … East Valley (4-6, 12) is the No. 2 seed to 3A regionals after a 4-1 win over No. 4 North Central (1-9, 3) at East Valley. Four different Knights’ scored. EV held the tiebreaker over Shadle for the higher seed.

Cross country

Idaho 3A District I-II: Bonners Ferry’s girls edged Timberlake by a point while the Timberlake boys topped Bonners Ferry for their fourth consecutive district title as all four teams qualified for state at Mirror Lakes Golf Course in Bonners Ferry.

Timberlake swept the individual titles with Brian Tucker first in 17:38 and Alex Turbin winning the girls in 22:08, to become the Tigers’ first girls district champion.

Panorama League: Kate Reidy of St. George’s set a course record on her home turf in 19:46 and the Dragons girls won the league title. Republic, led by Nik Michel, finished 2-5 to win the boys team title while the Dragons’ Britton Stamper was the individual champ at 17:39.

Bi-County League: Reardan won the boys title and Northwest Christian the girls in a race where the three scoring teams were only separated by a point.

Jeff Pope of Valley Christian won the boys race in 18:24 at Harrington Golf Course while Lisa Vandenburg of Northwest Christian won the girls race in 23:02.

Volleyball

Greater Spokane League: Alexis Olgard had 11 kills, five aces and seven blocks to give the Mead Panthers (8-1) a 25-16, 25-16, 25-5 victory over the University Titans (4-5). The regular season wraps up Tuesday.
