Bowman joins Hurricanes
Spokane Chiefs forward Drayson Bowman will join the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes for the duration of the playoffs, the Hurricanes announced Friday.
Bowman, 20, finished the season ranked fourth in the WHL in goals with 47 this season, and led all Chiefs skaters with 83 points (47 goals, 36 assists) in 62 games played.
Carolina’s third-round pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Bowman also led all Chiefs in goals (eight) and points (13) during the WHL playoffs, as Spokane knocked off Seattle before falling to Vancouver in seven games in the WHL’s Western Conference semifinals.
Bowman will skate and travel with the Hurricanes throughout the postseason, joining forwards Zach Boychuk, Patrick Dwyer and Brandon Sutter, defensemen Brett Carson and Bryan Rodney, and goaltender Justin Peters, who were recalled from Albany last weekend.
The group of extra players the team carries in the postseason is affectionately known as the “Black Aces.”
Though their names do not appear on the team’s regular roster, the players gain experience by practicing and traveling with the team, and they are available to be added to the team’s roster if necessary.

Sandpoint grabs ex-NFL QB
Former NFL quarterback Jake Plummer will be the quarterbacks coach at Sandpoint High School this season, head coach Mike Mitchell said.
Plummer, who lives in the resort town, will be paid as a normal assistant high school coach, Mitchell said.
“It will not be as much as NFL pay,” Mitchell said.
A native of Boise, Plummer played at Arizona State, and at Arizona and Denver of the NFL before retiring in 2006.
Plummer threw for more than 29,000 yards, plus 161 touchdowns and 161 interceptions in his decade-long pro career.
“He wants to help out as much as he can and help the kids of the community,” Mitchell said. “He’s a great guy.”
